Thank you for all the support and kind words, I never expected my story to resonate so deeply. I must admit sharing hasn’t been easy, with a lot of should haves, and what ifs flying about. At first, I wasn’t going to but then a fellow diver reminded me that these lessons could help someone, so here I am.

On hindsight, it’s crazy how a chain of small seemingly innocuous issues can stack, leading to a life-threatening situation. Everything points to one thing – DIVE SAFETY.

BUT FIRST, THE STORY…

It was our first dive of the day. We were a group of four and briefed to expect a very strong current drift dive. The plan: to fight the current to the reef, hook in, watch the sharks, unhook on the guide’s signal but remain in position, release together, and drift to our safety stop.

It did not go as planned. We ended up drifting to our safety stop with quite a bit of distance between each diver. During the drift, one diver then had several entanglement issues and got stuck. Being the last in the group, I made the decision to stop and wait, as the rest of the group drifted way past with the strong current making it impossible to fin back. I figured the odds of 2 together was better than 1.

Long story short, by the time the situation was resolved, both of us were out of gas at 25m deep. I grabbed my friend and bolted for the surface. With a deployed SMB in one hand and my friend in the other—I could not hold on to my regulator, and it was pulled from my mouth during ascent which probably led me to drinking and inhaling more water than “necessary”. When we finally broke the surface, I yelled out loud (due to lung over expansion), orally inflated my bcd, and passed out. And, you know the rest.

I was reluctant to share such a traumatic event so publicly, but a chat with Shannon changed my mind (thank you for that!).

TW: Drowning and a tale of how I made an emergency u-turn at the pearly gates. This version is strictly from my POV and whatever little memory I have of that day.

20 Feb, we were day 5 into our diving adventure in the Deep South of Maldives. A series of unfortunate events led to me and another diver being out of gas (empty tanks) underwater at 25-29 metres of depth. I realised how screwed we were, but I thought to myself…
I’m not dying today.
With no one nearby to help, I decided to swim that distance up to the surface in just 1 minute with my friend in tow. My lungs burned on the way up, begging for oxygen. Instinctively, my mouth opened for a breath, and inhaled a mouthful of water.

“DON’T DO THAT IVY” I thought, forcing my mouth shut, but my nose immediately took a breath all on its own, as I helplessly felt seawater gush into my lungs.

We were at the halfway point now, I could almost see the surface. With whatever willpower I had left, I closed that distance and finally break the surface of the water. As oxygen starved as I was, I managed to make myself buoyant on the surface before passing out. Right before I passed out, I tried very hard to breathe in all the air I could, but every breath was accompanied by a sharp, stabbing pain in my lungs.
I’m not dying today… and everything went dark.
A lot happened after I passed out, but I have absolutely no recollection. Apparently I was shouting out loud with every breath I took.

The next time I regained a bit of consciousness (or was it subconsciousness), I was still struggling to breathe. By this time I was already on the dive boat, and someone was administering emergency O2 to me. But the excruciating pain continued with every breath I took. The pain was so intense, I thought to myself “Why not take a break from it? Let’s just rest.” I felt myself slowly slipping, relaxing, and it felt so good to take a break.

Life has changed so much I barely recognise the person in these photos from 2 years ago.

Do I miss being underwater? Yes.
Am I scared of the ocean still? Yes.

I do love the person I’ve become since. But I also miss the bold, fearless and adventurous spirit that seems to have gone into hiding.

Perhaps one day I will find the balance. I can only hope. by @883ivy
