Originating during the colonial era in America, the term reflects the appearance of cornfields where enslaved people worked. In the Caribbean, they’re called "canerows," linked to sugarcane plantations.

These intricate braids were not only about beauty—they served as a form of communication during slavery, with specific patterns conveying escape routes and safe havens. Women even braided essential items like gold and seeds into their hair to sustain themselves if they escaped, turning their hairstyles into tools of survival.

Cornrows embody innovation and cultural identity, arising from a history of struggle and resistance. It's crucial to recognize their significance beyond trends; they represent a legacy of strength and dignity.
