Random - Arpeggio Springs

Arpeggio Springs is Random’s third 8bitpeoples release, following 2007’s Bad Joke EP. Nineteen years is a long time, but the sound hasn’t missed a step – or even a tick!

The EP gathers unreleased Game Boy tunes written some time between 2009 and 2013, alongside a couple of newer tracks made for last year’s LSDj 25th Anniversary Party in Stockholm.

Across the collection, the melodic instincts and command of LSDj that defined Random’s earlier work are on full display. From loose, danceable chipdisco grooves, to tracks with a more triumphant, melancholic sweep.

It marks both a return to chipmusic, as well as the start of something new and still unknown.

After Belgium, a group of us crushed into a small car for a few hours to make our way over to Amsterdam for our first stop in the Netherlands. We played at a venue called Paradiso, with Bud Melvin again sharing the stage with us, along with Lo-Bat(@wautermannaert), FirestARTer (@xorelectronics), Hyperkut, and Polar_B. The C-Men (@julian_van_aalderen) continued, searing his fellow countrymen’s retinas with visuals pumped out from a couple of Amigas.

I vividly remember the gear spread on the performance table for this one being particularly impressive, a seemingly endless array of Game Boys, early home computers, and DIY electronics, bathed in light streaming in through a giant arched window behind the stage during setup and soundcheck. Before the show kicked off we had a bit of time to wander around the city, take in some sights, and hit up a couple of record shops.

By this point we were starting to get into the flow of the tour and just having the time of our lives, hanging out and playing alongside friends that we also happened to be big fans of. There was still another month of touring ahead of us. by @8bitpeoples

In Brussels we linked up with Jeroen from Alles Los, whose invitation to come play a few dates in Europe served as the initial catalyst for this whole journey that rapidly stretched to a global scale. Some friends that we’d be playing with over the next few dates also joined us at this point, among them Bud Melvin, Lo-Bat (@wautermannaert), firestARTer (@xorelectronics), and (on VJ duty) The C-Men (@julian_van_aalderen).

Many trappist ales were enjoyed during our time in Belgium, something that closed the loop in a sense, as they’d played a key role in @bit_shifter and I deciding to embark on this Buddy Movie Road Trip with Game Boys. Shout out Vol de Nuit and Burp Castle in NYC for fueling the dream. If we’d invested the money we’d spent on all that beer we’d probably both be retired already, but you can’t put a price on the memories we got outta this — 401Ks be damned 😅😅😅

The gig was at a venue called Beursschouwburg, which roughly translates to “Beer Show Town” and fully lived up to its name (no idea, just made that up). Bud Melvin joined us on stage for this one and instantly charmed and offended the crowd with his DMG-backed banjo playing and wry lyrical stylings. Julian pumped out the live Amiga visuals while Josh and I pumped our fists and waved our hands around, headbanging to tracker music.

International Chiptune Resistance Archival Dump 003

After beginning the tour in London, we headed directly to Barcelona for the next gig at a venue called Sidecar. Set greeted us at the airport with his whiteboard emblazoned with a pixelated smiley and we immediately felt at home. The night was packed from start to finish and I remember being impressed by the energy coming off the floor. Yes, Robot and Rabato joined us and laid down some ripping live hardware sets.

I don’t remember if it was this same night, but at some point during our time in BCN @bit_shifter was groped by an overly enthusiastic woman on La Rambla. I think we wound up locked inside a bar after hours at some point as well? We were fortunate to be staying with @meneooh who was an amazing host and guide to the city, and who we we’d later get to share the stage with on several continents in the years after.

The tour kicked off in London for a night called Esoteric at Ginglik, and micromusic friend lektrogirl was integral in helping put this one together. Ginglik was one of London’s many (apparently??) converted underground toilets and the vibes that night were excellent. by @8bitpeoples

NULLSLEEP
Nullsleep employs obsolete hardware and a DIY ethos to produce lo-tek hi-nrg music – mutating and intersecting jungle, footwork, acid, chiptune, and gabber. He is the founder of 8bitpeoples, a netlabel focused on music made with early computers and videogame consoles in a deliberate rejection of planned obsolescence.

CHEAP DINOSAURS
Cheap Dinosaurs is a psychedelic prog rock band. Based out of Philadelphia and led by ex-Chromelodeon leader Dino Lionetti, Cheap Dinosaurs’ audio-visual experience combines pop melodies with jagged rusty rhythms, circuit bent sounds and dirty synthesizer leads.

NMLSTYL
nmlstyl is joey mariano’s audio visual project. The live show combines chip/synth/vapor-wave, surf rock, techno, instrumental hip hop, and retro 80s textures. Influenced by video game soundtracks, jazz professionals, and DIY punk, their performances offer a mix of nostalgic and contemporary sounds. Live, the electronic beats are replaced by Yusef Kelliebrew’s powerful and dynamic drumming.

datacats is the results of decades of engineering to produce the most melancholic and somber chipmusic known to humankind.

sm0hm (@ess_mtsn) - pointe

sm0hm is the long-lost chiptune alias of Sweden-based Ess Mattisson, whose past work includes releases on mp3death, hexawe and DataDoor, as well as product design and software development at Elektron and @fors.fm.

His debut release on 8bitpeoples is a homecoming of sorts. As an LSDJ user since the mid-2000s, he has long been fascinated with the technical and aesthetic aspects of chip music and drawn inspiration from trackers to inform his subsequent professional work on synthesizers.

The tracks on pointe push the Game Boy into the territory of heavier club sounds, leveraging its raw lo-fi character to great effect, in stark contrast to the hyper-glossy production prevalent today. There is a clear continuation here of a lineage that includes x|k’s Nestek and Outra — sounds conjured from old tech that refuses to be labeled obsolete, as it relentlessly pushes further into the future. by @8bitpeoples

Hyped to be bringing the LO-TEK HI-NRG sounds back to the east coast for a couple dates in March. Highly developed muscle memory tracker freak shit meets triple-wielding (SID / 303 / 202) acid mayhem at rapidly increasing BPMs for maximum impact.

Saturday 3/8 • First stop BOSTON, where I’ll be performing on the final night of @bostonbitdown — a 3 day chiptune / digital fusion festival showcasing 50 artists representing a dizzying spread of different styles and approaches.
