Sharing the first piece from my new Substack, OFFScript.

It’s a two-part story about booking Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds on @oprah in February 2011. From my sickbed, with a 103 fever, and only a week and a half to pull it off.

Helping Carrie and Debbie tell their story on that stage, with all the honesty, humor, and courage it required from both of them, is one of the moments I’m most proud of in 30 years of work. Being trusted with it was a privilege.

My longtime client @malcolmjenkins is headed to Canton this week to celebrate his good friends Drew Brees and Larry Fitzgerald Jr. as they enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

If you know Malcolm, you know he shows up for his friends.

In 2022, he did the same when he trusted @realrclark and a two-month-old @thepivot with the first interview announcing his retirement.

We built the media strategy around that gut decision. It makes even more sense today.

⚾️NEW Substack Alert. From @roehmkr > I am a huge baseball fan. I played softball as a kid, once convinced my sorority sisters to go to spring training in Bradenton, and I’ve had the pleasure of working with a few baseball icons over the years.

But one of the best times I’ve had on the field was my 5-year-old daughter Serena shouting “Let’s Play Ball” to thousands of fans at Angels Stadium in 2010.

I write about it in my new Substack piece.

“The contract is the floor, not the ceiling.”

That’s what @tramasar told me. He’s negotiated more than $1 billion in NBA contracts. He was @iambarondavis agent when they were both 23, fresh out of @uclambb

In 2008, our small team did something the league wasn’t ready for: we went to the Sundance Film Festival to premiere the documentary that BD exec-produced about gang violence in South Central in January…in the middle of the NBA season while Baron was still an active All-Star.

Despite the criticism, we pushed forward. It led to an Emmy nomination. A Congressional screening. A new playbook for athlete-led storytelling.

Baron was one of the first to have a production company. Many others have followed, but he will always be the OG. Today athletes are celebrated for their achievements outside their sport, but BD was ahead of his time.

Game 4 tonight at the Garden. Two-time NBA All-Star @iambarondavis finished his career in New York.

Watching this Knicks run, I keep thinking about the athletes I’ve worked with who used their platforms before it was rewarded.

In 2008, Baron premiered his first documentary at Sundance. “Crips and Bloods: Made in America.”

It earned an Emmy nomination. He took it to Congress. He helped push federal legislation to address youth violence.

He got criticized the whole time for being a distraction. He ignored the noise.

The athletes who have gravitated to me, the ones I’m most proud to have collaborated with, use their platforms for something bigger than themselves.

Baron was one of the first willing to go all in.

Grateful to have worked with him and his agent @tramasar at @lifesportsagency for the majority of BD’s NBA career.
