[Expeditions to New Heights]
Nate Douglas, Washington ’08, has taken mountaineering to the extreme. After a trip to Antarctica, he became the first Beta known to have completed the Seven Summits — the highest mountain on each continent. Everest in Asia, Aconcagua in South America, North America's Denali, Africa's Kilimanjaro, Europe's Elbrus, Vinson in Antarctica and Oceania's Carstensz Pyramid all summited. The list of additional mountains he's stood atop of also includes Seven Summit alternatives Mont Blanc in Europe and Kosciuszko in Australia.

“The Seven Summits isn’t just about standing on the highest peaks in the world; it’s about proving you can consistently show up, adapt and perform in the most extreme environments on the planet.”

His 2025 expeditions included the summit of Annapurna I, the 10th tallest mountain in the world and one of the most technically challenging over 8,000 meters. Now, Nate is ready for his next challenge; there's always another mountain to climb. by @8douggy

What an incredible journey on Annapurna 1. 🏔️ I wish I took more footage during the climb, Annapurna was gnarly AF. Over 20,000ft of elevation gain up to 26,500ft in under a week! Unrelenting steepness and vertical climbing the entire way. This pushed me to my absolute limits, and stretched me further than I’ve ever been stretched on a mountaineering expedition. Weather forcing us to attempt the summit earlier than planned, on my Birthday, April 7, made this lifetime moment even more special! 26,545ft (8091m).

“The most breathtaking views are earned after the toughest ascents”.
Nate Duglas 🇺🇸 @8douggy , a professional mountaineer, captures this essence perfectly while navigating the awe-inspiring yet daunting Hillary Step on Mount Everest. This incredible moment was expertly captured by Pemba Tashi Sherpa 🇳🇵 @pemba_t_the8000ers , a master of his craft.

Just 40 days remain until we embark on the ultimate adventure once more.
Keep an eye out for more updates on our journey!”

Unpopular truth:
Being fit and strong will give you access to some of the most beautiful places that you’d otherwise never see.
It’s not about how you look, it’s about living a fuller life. 💪

Been going down the archives rabbit hole recently and rediscovered this gem (still one of my favourites) of @8douggy making his way through the Khumbu Icefall during the spring 2022 Everest expedition.

Were times actually simpler then, or were we just making worse decisions at higher altitudes? 😂🧊🏔️

10 years ago, in July 2016, my new friend @harrisonl98465 took me to my first mountaineering attempt & summit on Mt. Rainier. We’ve since climbed it a handful of times together. Ten years later, we returned for his 40th ascent of Rainier…and my 8th. Eight attempts. Eight successful summits. A 100% summit success rate.

Ten years after my first Rainier summit, I find more and more joy in helping others reach places they once thought were beyond their reach.

This was also my 41st mountaineering ascent and 40th successful summit. But the number that matters most to me is the people I’ve shared these mountains with. I’ve now had the privilege of bringing first-time climbers to the summit of Rainier several times, and this climb was another reminder of why I love doing it.

I worked around the clock to help the newer climbers rest, prepare, and be ready for the summit push, watching people accomplish something they never imagined possible just two months earlier.

The mountain gave us -18°C temperatures with wind chill on the summit, incredible sunrises and sunsets, long days, hard work, laughter, and some unforgettable time with friends.

Grateful for the mountains. Grateful for the friends who first brought me here. And especially grateful that I now get to help others discover what they’re capable of. 🏔️ by @8douggy

Camp 2, Annapurna I (8,091m) 20 minutes after arrival. This is what the Himalaya looks like when it reminds you who’s really in control. Mountaineering was never about the summit- it’s about risk mitigation, judgment, and no small amount of luck. Summit push just 2 days later. Consider myself fortunate to have missed 2 more avalanches after this one, in this exact spot, that lies directly on the climbing route.

“Giving up is not in the blood, sir. It’s not in the blood.”

Holding out hope for Nims @nimsdai and the 9 other climbers still missing on Broad Peak.

Tragedies like this always hit home. I crossed paths with Nims on the side of Aconcagua- I was headed up, he was coming down. Then again, more than once, in Nepal: I was descending from the summit of Everest as he was heading up to Camp IV. He was always warm, always generous with his time. Nims inspired a whole generation of mountaineers and put the Nepal mountaineering community on the global map. One of those times, he signed his book with a personal note for my one-year-old nephew, that’s the kind of person he was.

In this sport we accept the risk. We just never expect our number to be called. Thoughts and prayers with the families and the search teams. Still holding out hope for a miracle. 🙏

Unfortunately, that miracle did not come thru 😢. Rest in peace dai 🙏 forever a legend 🏔️. by @8douggy

Mt. Baker summit. 3,286 meters above the noise (10,781’), made even better when good friends are by your side. No shortage of snacks, laughs and hard work! Another beautiful reminder that the best views are always earned. 🏔️ by @8douggy

Full circle moment. Nico was my flight instructor for the first half of my flight training, and now he’s a captain flying my flight home to Seattle! Good instructors are hard to find, and I’m grateful I had one who helped build the foundation of my aviation journey. Small world. Congratulations, Captain Nico! ✈️ by @8douggy
