This genuine BMW 1M was already a brilliant, snappy little attack dog of a car. But one day I looked at it and thought, “Yes, it’s quite good, but what it really needs is to be absolutely terrifying.”So, with the help of @emporium.performance we have ripped out its N54 heart and stuffed in the magnificent S65 V8. But we’re not stopping there. Oh no. Because we are allegedly somewhat unhinged, we’ve gone an bolted a massive ESS G1 supercharger to the top of it.This magnificent beast is called PYRAT. And pretty soon, burying your right foot will make that glorious 4.0L V8 shriek all the way to a spine-tingling 8,600 RPM.@emporium.performance @bmretrofitz @esstuning @southernbm by @8mw1m

Whether you are in a hatch, a convertible, or if you are very lucky, a 1M, you know exactly why the E8x family of BMW’s are so good. It’s that short wheelbase, and the rear drive purity. It is a car that feels like it has been shrink wrapped around its own mechanicals, and has become an extension of yourself.But here’s something that might scramble your brain - that entire architecture, that fundamental 1 Series vibe, did not start as a hatchback or even a hard top coupe. It started as this:The 2002 BMW CS1 Concept.A convertible with tail lights that appear to be lifted from an E85 Z4, an SMG gearbox from an E46, and some funky interior styling the likes we’ve never seen in a production BMW.@1er_m_register by @8mw1m

Of course, simply swapping an S65 into a 1M as-is was never going to be good enough..Fresh from the CO₂ blaster, these once-filthy engine parts now look so clean you could serve dinner off them. Heat shields, subframe, undertrays, assorted aluminium bits and bobs — all stripped back, freshened up, and ready to go into a car that is rapidly descending from “ambitious” into “mildly obsessed”.Some people spring-clean the house.@emporium.performance spring-clean V8’s. The blueprint for a very bad idea?Take one BMW 1M.Remove the N54.Add the 4.0L S65 V8 from an E92 M3.Then supercharge it, because apparently an 8600rpm V8 in a short-wheelbase 1M was just too sensible.PYRAT V8.No restraint. No apology. No factory approval. And yes, it’s a real 1M.P.S. To everyone still emotionally recovering from the EV swap prank: relax. It’s much worse than that.@emporium.performance by @8mw1m

Time to come clean.Back in April, I posted a photo suggesting PYRAT - my black BMW 1M - was being converted into an EV.The internet reacted calmly, by which I mean some people nearly inhaled their coffee, others began typing angry things in capital letters, and a few genuinely mourned the apparent death of internal combustion.But no, that was just an April fool’s prank.PYRAT is not going electric.Quite the opposite, actually.What you’re looking at here is a perfectly good, running and registered E92 M3 being relieved of its magnificent 4.0L S65 V8, followed by said V8 sitting in front of a now engine-less 1M, in a rather expensive organ transplant.And then, finally, the plan:An ESS-supercharged S65 V8.In a BMW 1M.With a manual transmission, ofc.Because apparently a short-wheelbase, wide-arched, angry little coupe with a boosted straight-six wasn’t unreasonable enough.The N54 era is over.The V8 era begins.🔧 @emporium.performance ⌨️ @bmretrofitz 🏪 @southernbm 🐌 @esstuning by @8mw1m

BMW captured lightning in a bottle with the 1M. Instead of building a car that drivers would evaluate - they built a car that would evaluate drivers.The 1M doesn’t flatter you. It doesn’t tidy everything up in the background and let you feel like you did it. It rewards skill, punishes laziness, and makes the driver earn the title - and reap the rewards.Since then, BMW has kept upping the capability of their M cars - but it’s been at the expense of driver involvement. Some see the CS badged examples as trying to recapture some of that lightning in a bottle once again - but has the G87 M2 CS done it?Full video on the DriverReviews YouTube channel by @8mw1m

Most cars live quiet, uncomplicated lives.PYRAT has never really understood the concept.This black BMW 1M has, over the years, gone through 2 engines, 14 turbos, 6 clutches, and 24 injectors in pursuit of speed, noise, and what can only loosely be described as mechanical mayhem. Its N54 heart has been a huge part of the car’s story, but the time has come.It’s being pulled out.Forever.Not built again. Not refreshed. Not shelved for “one day.”Done.So now comes the interesting bit.What do you put into a BMW 1M like PYRAT when the usual answers are no longer nearly outrageous enough? Whatever it is, PYRAT’s next chapter won’t be subtle.The N54 will always be fondly remembered as something that was glorious when it worked right, and ridiculous when turned up to 11. Some cars whisper.PYRAT doesn’t.PYRAT kicks the garage door off its hinges, lights a match, and shouts “RIGHT THEN” before storming off towards the nearest stretch of tarmac like it’s late for a bar fight.It’s compact.
