Invasive yellow-legged hornets were recently found over the summer in Union and Guilford counties in North Carolina. The pests, which originate from southeast Asia, are known to attack honeybees and have caused significant declines in honeybee populations in some parts of Europe. ⁠

State agriculture officials say the best way local residents can help by building simple traps for yellow-legged hornets, which our digital producer Eli Chen @elichenreports walks us through. If you find one in a trap, that helps let state apiarists know that a yellow-legged hornet is in the area. ⁠

UNC-Chapel Hill is in the early stages of a ten-year plan to increase its enrollment. By 2034, the university wants to add 5,000 students to its undergraduate class. So far, the school has reached about a quarter of that goal after enrolling its largest first-year class in history this fall.⁠

But trustees and administrators, concerned the university isn't growing fast enough, want to supersize that target.⁠
⁠
UNC-Chapel Hill Trustee Jim Blaine remarked at a summer board meeting that he believes the university's enrollment selectivity can come across as elitist.⁠

Researchers at UNC-Chapel Hill have received $40 million to use artificial intelligence over four years to help create personalized vaccines for those with cancer.⁠

The funding for the project is from the Open AI foundation nonprofit. Open AI is the creator of Chat GPT. UNC's project is called "Generative Immunotherapy."⁠

WakeMed and Atrium Health can move ahead with their proposed merger, following a vote by Wake County commissioners on Monday night.⁠
⁠
On a 5-2 vote, the board approved changes to WakeMed's articles of incorporation and a transfer agreement. The Federal Trade Commission will have to approve the deal before it becomes final.⁠
⁠
The vote follows months of negotiations between county attorneys and WakeMed. Commissioners were supposed to vote on the deal in May, after it was approved by WakeMed's board of directors. That vote was delayed after outcry from commissioners, state officials, and community members.⁠

Earlier this year, federal immigration officials detained and swiftly deported Raleigh resident José Eliezer Martinez-Andino, 21, after encountering him while he was on a cross-country trip in search of work as an auto mechanic.⁠
⁠
He has Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, a type of legal status that is granted to young people who have been neglected and/or abused by a parent.⁠
⁠
Martinez-Andino has now returned to Raleigh after a long journey. He was deported to Honduras in April, then flown back to the U.S. in early August after a federal judge ruled that he should not have been deported. Upon returning, he was held for more than a month in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody at the Port Isabel Detention Facility in Texas until his release on Sept. 11.⁠
⁠
"I think he is just really excited to be no longer detained because we all know how difficult the situation has been under this administration, with how difficult it is to get people released," said Allison Chan, Martinez-Andino's attorney.⁠

He was also very eager to reunite with his young daughter, who was born in the U.S. ⁠

State employees will likely pay more for healthcare if they use hospital systems in four rural counties north of the Triangle.⁠

The State Health Plan is wrapping up new insurance coverage agreements with hospitals across the state, as part of its "Preferred Provider" program to reduce costs. The goal is to steer patients toward hospitals that agree to offer lower-cost services.⁠

Shaun Ingram keeps his black aviator sunglasses on as he sits inside a local community center. Metal chairs form a rough circle in the center of this large room where the Richmond County Coalition for Justice and Black Empowerment meets every Thursday.⁠

“ The Coalition came together based off Black land, the disenfranchisement of Black people in our community, (and) people not recognizing our indigenous status,” said Ingram, 42, a Richmond County native.⁠
⁠
The Coalition has also been a vital source of information for community members to learn about Amazon’s $10 billion data center that’s under construction a few miles away from this meeting place.⁠

As Raleigh eases out of months of severe drought and toward a cooler, wetter autumn, the city is reviewing its Water Shortage Response Plan to better prepare for water supply emergencies. Consumers in Raleigh — as well as in Franklin County, Johnson County, and Fuquay-Varina — may see alternate-day irrigation rules and different criteria for what triggers water restrictions.⁠

Raleigh Water's Environmental Coordinator Ed Buchan and Director Whit Wheeler presented about Raleigh's water outlook at the City Council's Tuesday work session. Buchan said that in reviewing the city's response plan, Raleigh Water is examining both the current drought's progression and the strong La Niña signal that set it up.⁠
