Introducing Garrett Evans,LMSW.

Contrary to the recent diminishment of Professional Licensure as simply a form of “billing insurance”, this has been a journey of hard work, A LOT of fees, sleepless nights of preparation and a development of a personal ethos I want myself to employ as mental health practitioner. In the field of Social Work, professional Licensure represents a code of ethics, a board of accountability and an insurance of trust between myself and the clients who are vulnerable enough to share their most personal and challenging aspects of their lives. We live in a time where actually doing the work to hold a title pales in comparison to how easily you can grift people with snake oil, a microphone and “degrees” that have no origin or accreditation beyond the shiny frame you put on the wall behind you.

I worked hard for this shit. Nothing was Honorary. And lets be clear…Licensure is by no means the end-all, be-all and there are amazing Social Workers,Life Coaches,Spiritual Motivators who do work and have skills that even the most degree’d and licensed individuals cant but two things can exist at once. This was 7yrs of 3 Associate Degrees, 1 Bachelors and 2 Masters of work to get here and i’ll be damned if the most vulnerable and least trusting of mental health services become a gender war debate on a podcast or a stepping stone to one’s next speaker fee.

God don’t play about me and I can never pay him back for the path he’s set me on. Thank you to my friends, family, mentors and anyone who’s assisted me on this journey. I Love you.

Yesterday…I did another thing.

I graduated from the illustrious, #1 HBCU,The Real HU, Howard University with Masters in Social Work. The last two years at Howard not only made me step into to who I am but remember who I’ve always been and who I want to be going forward. Growing up,all I ever wanted to be was an HBCU grad and Morehouse Man and for whatever reason we’ve been socialized that if these things don’t happen at 18 or by 25 then somehow you’re off the made-up trajectory of life and it isn’t possible. I’ve never been “traditional” tho and actually have always made an effort not to be. When I think about how non-traditional my life’s work has been,it goes back to my desire to be a wardrobe stylist and the gratification I received in making people feel good about themselves. There’s something about tapping into one’s inner beauty and strengths that I’ve always gravitated toward and felt was my life calling.

But God said…what if it’s bigger than that? You can dress a person in the most expensive garment but when they take it off, they still have to live with how they show up in the mirror. The field of Social Work and practice of Psychotherapy is something that requires you to experience your own self-doubt, acknowledgment of your own insecurities and advocating for your own personal strengths before you can advocate for anyone else’s. My first semester at HU,I felt so overwhelmed that I cried in my own therapist’s office for an hour, sobbing about if I’d made the right choice. I did.
Anybody who knows me knows that I just hate a lot of noise in my life. Be it confrontation, personal dissatisfaction, arguing, and anything outside of the calm,poised,nonchalant,avoidant,only-child bubble I’ve curated for myself but Howard made me get upset, it made me lean into confrontation, it made advocate for things I’d otherwise just walk away from & never look back at.

To the amazing mentors, educators and listening ears i’ve had from Sac City to SFSU to Howard: Jamil Malik-my true life saver, Sam Colby,Giovanna Hunt,Dr. Portia Rouse,Katrina Floyd,Fallon Jones,Dr Tirmazi,Dean Jennings. Thank you.

20yrs of The Mighty Mighty Gaucho…

An amazing night with amazing folks. Glad to be reunited with my people. I wish I had more photos but the best nights are the ones we don’t get to fully document. Thank You to Isiah for putting this together for those of us who missed pt.1, to Johnette for curating a space and environment that felt like coming home and to Will for giving us the space to make this happen.

We came in 2002 as the rowdiest group of freshmen and left in 2006 as seniors who were the end of an era. I wouldn’t have wanted to rule the school with a better group of people. Love and proud of you all, ‘06💚🤍💚🤍💚🤍

Dear El Cerrito High school, thank you for all you taught me, for making me break out of my comfort zone, for teaching me how to lead, for creating life long bonds i’ll never let go of, for making me laugh at things I still laugh at 20yrs later, for creating the foundation for how I show up in the world today, for forcing me to be confrontational, for pushing me into deciding who I want to be as a human being. taken in El Cerrito High School by @___365g
