The project is a humble service and staff quarters for the Mati BnB that was already underway. For us ofcourse the excitement was the site, it's geography and landscape.

The site is on a steep contour with an access road on the top edge and the village a short 30min walk away. On good days you can spot the Kanchenjunga from the location, which are few as the place gets roughly eight months of rain. It is quite literally a trek even to get the material on site.

To do a remote project is tough, but when the sight at the site is beautiful everything works. Masterplan showing the site contours, location and orientation of the buildings.

The structural grid had to be a modest span, which meant a lean plan - we split the functions into the service (kitchen, storage, adda and dining above) and staff quarters in an L shaped arrangement to create a vestibule just across the entrance that gives a framed view of the main block and the landscape beyond as one enters the property.

We knew the architecture had to be simple. It was a long distance project which meant we couldn't monitor the progress on site - the lack of control on site meant getting the fundamentals right; proportions, volume, light, ventilation and clean circulation. Here you see the cross section between both blocks and the vestibule in between.

While designing the service and staff quarters it seemed obvious to consider the regional material and construction techniques i.e; Stone masonry base and ikra (bamboo + mud wattle and daub) above, however once we visited the site it was evident that the we had to optimise some of the decisions, but here we present the initial ideas of the wall section.

We were approached to design an eatery that was simple and approachable for all. The site is situated in the junction where the 5th main road and the 8th cross road meet. The 8th cross road has a permanent steel skeletal structure that during festivals holds free public performances. This was an important clue to situate the mass in such a way that it recreates a verandah towards the street - reminiscent of traditional mysore homes and a backyard garden seating which is more intimate and private - both connected by a vestibule through the kitchen and the service counter.

We were approached to design an eatery that was simple and approachable for all. The plan needed to be highly efficient as a service driven project, the movement of customers, staff, produce and waste cycle had to be well orchestrated.

The design intent was simple, we were keen on ensuring that we demolish as little as possible, to respect the material resources but also satisfy the brief, the space was gently extended with skylights into the generous setbacks, swelling up ever so slightly. We remodelled the house by literally stretching its boundaries.

We were approached to design the renovation of an existing house in mysore. The house is about 40 years old and had gone through an extension 20 years ago. As an old home it had ample set backs but very small spaces, the next generation wanted to have more spacious interiors and a more contemporary design. They also wanted us to consider some basic vastu corrections to the house.
