Fieldwork: Autumn
One day workshop with Joe Walsh and Andrew Kerton
Saturday, October 24th, 10am - 5pm

Taking place within 11 acres of community land, on the outskirts of London, artists Joe Walsh and Andrew Kerton invite you to Fieldwork: Autumn, a one day workshop aimed at tuning into rhythmic processes of organic expression, shared by both plant and human organisms.

Proposing activity on the land as embodied research, we will facilitate and prompt: direct observational drawing; somatic movement; sensory herbal connection; and a walking meditation around the garden. Time will also be given for reflection and sharing.

‘‘What’s in the garden in October: Hawthorn berries, Rosehips, Sloe (food for wildlife over winter); Lichen, moss, white mycelial threads in piled cut grass (very nice to find this), mushrooms, damp, things beginning to rot down in colder, wetter climate; plants flumping, flopping upon other plants, dead plant structures, some still intact with seeds to be disseminated, others already seeding for next year (incubating in the soil); maybe some dropped crab apples left; leaves starting to turn colour, withdrawing chloraphyll into themselves, saving energy; dead rotting logs, turning very slowly to humus’’ JW

“Somatically Autumn is an appropriate time to explore our own internal fluid-membrane balance through tuning into the spongey nature of our tissues and releasing residual tension held there through guided self-touch and movement. Also, as we’ll be amongst mushrooms, it feels appropriate for an embodied exploration of our nervous system: identifying analogies of form and function between our neural synaptic web and the unseen networked structure and connectivity of mycelium. A good time for finding balance between our outer and inner worlds..” AK

This day offers collective activities for immersion, reflection and support. No drawing or movement experience required, only an open curiosity.

Workshop takes place in a community garden 25 minute walk from High Barnet station (Northern Line). Car parking is available.
Cost: £80 (£60 low income)
A deposit of £25 is asked to secure your place.

Drawing Center for Humans and Machines Conference Day 2

Participatory Drawing Workshop — Deep Observation: Plant Forms led by Artist Joseph Walsh @_____joewalsh__

In these sessions participants give attention to plant life, and use drawing, painting and notation as an approach to form a relation with the more than human.

They were guided by exercises with prompts along the way, using drawing as an appropriate activity to go into deep observation. From this may be gleaned a plant’s process, behaviour and perhaps an ecology.

Alongside looking at Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s observation methods and ‘delicate empiricism’, which involves direct observation and imagination. It considered how the study informs ways of relating with ourselves and other kinds of consciousness.

Joseph Walsh is an artist rooted in forging human-nature connections through his work with plants and learning through the upkeep of a plot of land in a wildlife community garden. He uses drawing, painting and film, informed by research into wide-ranging plant healing traditions and eco-theory, to actualise a co-existing with nature.

He studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths University, and has delivered courses and workshops at the Berlin Art Institute, Beaconsfield Gallery, Jamyang Buddhist Centre and IMT Gallery, London, as well as sharing insights with art students at Goldsmiths and Reading Universities. by @_____joewalsh__

Fieldwork - One Day Workshop, Sunday, August 9th, 10am - 5pm

Taking place within 11 acres of community land, on the outskirts of London, artists Joe Walsh and Andrew Kerton invite you to Fieldwork: a one day workshop aimed at tuning into the rhythmic processes of becoming, shared by both plant and human organisms.

Proposing activity on the land as embodied research, we will facilitate and prompt: direct observational drawing; somatic movement; sensory herbal connection; and a walking meditation around the garden. Time will also be given for reflection and sharing.

In ‘The Metamorphosis of Plants’, Goethe describes the stages of a plant’s growth as alternating between expansion and contraction - ’an expansion from the seed to the stem leaf, the calyx appears through a contraction, the flower leaves through an expansion, and the reproductive parts through a contraction’.
Understood somatically, this pattern of expanding and condensing is a fundamental rhythmic expression of all cellular organisms. So across the day we will be grounding a creative and contemplative relating to nature with finding, in movement, the various ways our human organism expresses this cyclical rhythm.

Through this analogous connection of plant growth with our own cellular nature, the day is an embodied enquiry into processes of emergence, offering collective activities for immersion, reflection and support.

No drawing or movement experience required, only an open curiosity.

Workshop takes place in a community garden 25 minute walk from High Barnet station (Northern Line). Car parking is available.

Cost: £80 (£60 low income)
A deposit of £25 is asked to secure your place.

Join us this full moon for Plant Gazing with Joseph Walsh, a unique opportunity to connect with plant allies and set personal intentions for the days ahead.

Immerse yourself in the IMT Gallery space, subtly smudged with mugwort to encourage chi flow. A curated selection of plants will be available for drawing and painting, accompanied by prompts and guidance on the techniques of plant gazing and observation.

We’ll take a moment to reconnect to our bodies and the living world through meditation, and a serene Lemon Balm tea ceremony, grounding ourselves in the present moment.

🌱 Plant Gazing will take place on Saturday 30 May from 6-8pm.

Space is limited. Follow the link in bio to find out more and book a place.

A limited number of tickets are available free of charge for residents of Tower Hamlets. These places have been lovingly created with support from Tower Hamlets Council.

In January, artists Rosalind Fowler (Stone Tellers) and Joseph Walsh initiated Beholding the Garden, a year-long residency at South London Urban Gardeners’ @_s.l.u.g._ Bellenden Gardens Nature Garden site in Peckham.

Together with a group of invited artists, we have been leading a series of alternative site visits to attune and sense into the land as a form of embodied research, through practices including movement, mapping, drawing, meditation and ritual approaches, craft-making, plant connection, sounding, and socially engaged practice.

The visits are site-specific, responding to what we encounter within the garden, and also exploring the relationship between this urban garden and the community outside.

Part 1 of the project, entitled Choreography and Pace, has been concerned with radically slowing down, investigating bodily relationships and sensory attunements with each other, and with the more-than-human inhabitants of this small, verdant patch of urban land.

Collaborative offerings have included an exquisite corpse writing exercise with @flatness.eu based around sightlines and queer perspectives on the garden, and @adkerton embodied exploration of the notochord, a significant structure in our embryological development, as we trace its energetic pathway in our mature bodies and in doing so explore the botanical gesture of rooting to rise.

The work continues to unfold..

Gratitude to Alice at SLUG for so generously offering us this space

💡 Explore experiential approaches to nature and ecology, and develop your artistic work through new ways of looking, sensing, and thinking.

🍀 Enroll now in the Live Online Course FLORAL TIME: How Artists Describe Plants by Joseph Walsh, part of the BAI Online Program by Berlin Art Institute.

⭐️ Across four sessions, participants will engage in activities and exercises that open up different perspectives on nature, drawing from herbalism, botany, philosophy, animism, and horticulture.

🔎 Apply artistic methods to human relationships with nature and explore otherwise “alien” epistemologies.

🔎 Engage with art, writing, and artefacts that reflect on how human beings relate to the natural world.

🔎 Discuss animist thinking, non-human time, the self in relation to plants, and storytelling practices that give natural phenomena a sense of personhood.

Joseph Walsh invites you to a rose tea ceremony and discussion of what has arisen from his residency during Beaconsfield's 30th anniversary 'exhillation' Manifesto for Sustainable Experimentation.

During his time with Beaconsfield, he has considered how the flourishing gallery garden might inform underlying environmental themes of the exhibition. He asks how plant communities and eco-systems growing alongside human organisational structures might inform or inflect one another.

Uppermost in the artist's mind are considerations of slow plant time in contrast to digital screen time, strategies for decentring the human and speculations about creating better environments for neuro-divergence. These topics are up for discussion, or participants can just appreciate the experience of rose tea, speaking less to let plants speak up.
