I’m thankful.

I’m inspired. I’m grateful. ✨ I hope everyone gets to roam Venice and Biennale one day. I hope you find an Airbnb where your Venice mom makes you breakfast in the morning while you sit on her rooftop as she shows you her art books and shares memories from the apartment she lived in for 30 years. Lucky-ass me!

Thank you, universe. ✨ Thank you, lucky stars. ✨ Sometimes you feel closer to the magic, closer to yourself, and that’s a special-ass thing. Peggy Guggenheim was right: Venice is the most incredible place to be alone.

Birthday B-Roll✨

The first year I came here was to celebrate the year I survived. Four years later, I find the routine of being in the same place at the same time each year helpful. It allows me to take stock of where I’ve progressed, where I’ve recessed, but mostly to celebrate the years I’ve done more than survive. There will always be Kea Kea before 2022 and Kea Kea after, and this year I think I made peace with the fact that there will always be that.

Magic in Milan✨4 ever—shoutout and all praise to Miuccia
A girl with a thing for chairs found her city 😂

Still pitching my Netflix show: “Around the World with REM, Chasing Koolhaas.”

Moments of the mundane become every brilliant things.
I’ve been reading about “Every Brilliant Thing”—a play about the happiest list on Earth: a child cataloging all the good things in life for a depressed parent. In my twenties, my friend Brendan told me to make one for the hard days. Mine’s pinned to the top of my notes; after some Shakespeare inspired dream, I renamed it Reasons to Be.

It starts with skin-on-skin contact.
For now, it ends lying in the middle of a field by the canal next to the Prada Foundation, hot sun drying my tears.
Yes—the beauty of the world 4 ever brings me to tears.

I started photographing these moments—none pictured here all just for me.
Masculine dudes at lunch, drinking wine with the back drop of pollen dancing in the light.
A dad lifting his daughter, like a board, to a dragon-shaped fountain after a slice of pizza.
A couple holding each other’s faces beside a sweet old Fiat, mid–goodbye.
When I say mundane I mean magic.
Me simply an unknown voyeur, their faces neatly archived in my mind.

What was on display was the beauty of human interaction.
I’d be the first to argue that design, architecture, art—the beautiful stuff seen here keep us alive.
But as someone who often walks alone, I know the chicken before the egg is that humans keep us going.

Audience interaction is key to the play for the purpose of knowing you’re not indeed alone, even when you spend days sort of lonely, while knowing you’re simultaneously blessed to sit in a café a friend recommended or stroll a home a lovely colleague wrote you a perfect description of.

If you’ve never thought of making a list like this or don’t need one, what a gift. If you need one I encourage adding a visual album with a better title than mine.

Yesterday was my soberversary, 4 years around sobrieties sun☀️

Looking back with gratitude, moving forward with grace, 4 ever, ever✨

Graduating from the university of self study, 4 years, 1460 days later. I always, steal the Jim Jones line, “married to a game that didn’t come with a wedding.” Yesterday, I got my cap and gown from sober university an institution I’m happy to contribute to brick by brick.

I’m very proud of me. I’m proud of everyone that is a classmate, a fellow, a teacher. I’m proud of anyone new on their journey. I’m proud of everyone staying in the game.

Mostly, I’m thankful.

This last year, I decided to focus on forgiving myself, to extend love to that younger version of myself. It made me grow bigger boundaries, it wasn’t perfectly executed and I still sped over caution cones at 75mph. I lost friends, I lost myself, I kept moving my body when depression took over, I found dance floors, I connected with my community and my people keeping me closer to my magic. It certainly didn’t make me perfect but it did bring me some form of peace and tidbits of hope. The last few weeks have been TOUGH, in some ways, the silver lining is it was a crash course in all of this, it was a keen reminder, to simply keep going.

It’s hard to be sober in a world where ICE leaves two year olds in cars, where it feels like late stage capitalism is bursting at the seams, where people (myself very included) aren’t holding enough space or grace for the collective.

May we all find more love in this club called life, may we all find more joy on a dance floor, may we all keep moving our bodies, may we all keep working in and out.

I choose to begin again, every day, and I’m very proud of that choice. It’s always only been one choice. Sobriety is still - the best gift I ever gave myself and I’m still buying Prada, still no shade Miuccia. I still haven’t found GAWD or AA (I didn’t do 12 steps I took 12,000). Finding the best version of me daily whether she’s bent over in tears or sweat is a remarkable accomplishment. 1461 days later I’m proud of you Keke, let’s keep fucking up commas and being better by very intentional design✨ by @____keara____
