Francis Bebey demonstrating how to play the one note bamboo flute. Filmed at real world studios during recording week in 1995.

Francis Bebey was a Cameroonian-born writer, guitarist, and composer, one of the best-known singer-songwriters of Africa. He is sometimes called the father of world music.

Highly experimental, Beby often incorporated Latin American, Western, and African sounds into his music.
Bebey became the first African musician to place synthesisers, electric keyboards and programmable drum machines at the centre of his music, setting them alongside traditional African xylophones, harps, sanzas, flutes and an array of drums and percussion.

Baka Women playing the water drums (Liquindi)

The Baka also known as the Bayaka are an ethnic group that inhabit southeastern rain forests of Cameroon, northern Republic of the Congo, northern Gabon, and southwestern Central African Republic.

Music and dance is an important part of life for the Baka people, using it to prepare for hunts and to show skill. Also being used in daily life for healing rituals, initiation rituals, traditional stories, group names, and for entertainment.

Living in a world of trees, only hearing natural sounds, means that from birth the Baka learn to listen acutely as it is vital for their survival. This sonic awareness leads them to become exceptionally musical. Song and dance permeate their lives both for ritual and for fun.

They are said to be the first humans to sing and cure illness and argument with song, they sing to enchant animals, bring luck in the hunt, to soothe babies and unite the group.

Hermeto Pascoal in a snippet from the 1985 film ‘Sinfonia do Alto Ribeira’

His music draws on the sounds of nature, domestic objects, and human speech, integrating the familiar and rendering it exotic. His concept of atonality contrasts with mainstream views, as he believes that unconventional note sequences can sound natural.

Directed by Ricardo Lua, this documentary was made to draw attention to the plight of Parque Estadual do Alto da Ribeira (High Creek State Park), a park near the southern border of São Paulo state. The park represented some of the last wild remnants of the Atlantic rain forest in the south.

Ricardo Lua was a fan of Hermeto’s music and had asked him to compose for their film, Hermeto loved the idea deciding to compose all the music in the park itself. The process was so remarkable that the film makers decided to make a documentary just on Hermeto and his band, composing everything on the spot.
