@chicago_reader MUSIC FEATURE. With such an abundance of amazing art in Chicago, I am beyond humbled to be featured in this week’s Reader. This deep, thoughtful, & extended piece by @sandritatrevino gets at the personal, political, artistic, & sonic heart of SONOROUS PRESENT. Treviño writes: “Sonorous Present addresses ruptures and losses and the ways we survive them—and not just the large-scale breaks caused by borders.” Please give this incredible piece a read. For your Grammy® Consideration • “Es Amor” • Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album.

Produced by Grammy Award–winning Beto Martinez and released on @otherly_love , Es Amor is a groove haven—a thrumming balm for hard days. Across ten tracks, tight, intricate arrangements bring son jarocho and cumbia together with psychedelic rock, contemporary jazz, and Afro-Cuban percussion in a distinctly Américan conversation, creating peaks and valleys meant to be met with hips, feet, hands, and hearts.

While writing the title track “Es Amor,” Chávez was struck by a melody that felt strangely familiar; weeks later, he discovered that his father had recorded that melody decades earlier. “Making this album together, each of us bringing our own stories and experiences, I couldn’t help but think of my father, of his melody, of everyone like him, then and now,” Chávez said. “Of people, immigrants, writing and singing love songs in the most brutal of circumstances, amidst power working to deny them their very humanity.” In turn, Dos Santos remind us of our linked stories and places and movements, and, in the face of overwhelming odds, of the urgency of renewed connection, and of what that feeling can sound like.

Equal parts dream and memory, spirit echo and migration story, this album’s core message—delivered with ánimo and style—love, in all its shades and surprise appearances, remains the most spirited, lasting response to a world marred by hate.

I received word that legendary troubadour Pablo Gonzalez recently passed. Poet, artist, huapanguero, and companion of the calling, I had the good fortune of knowing him, watching him perform, and being graced by his wisdom. “Sounds of Crossing” would not have been possible without him and countless other compañeros del destino. He inspired this passage in my book:

“The kinesthetic burning of energy atop the tablados enables layers of material and immaterial expenditure through dancing, chatting, and partying to the point of exhaustion, and this excessive, glorious burning off— lasting past sunrise—is slathered over the entire space with music sounding off into distances, disturbing sleep, inviting consumption for the sake of excretion. We take in the sound; our feet tap and burn and hurt; we hold each other close; our sweat is slick and smells like café de olla (cinnamon- laced coffee) and beer. The musical key suddenly changes, and the boot heels around me hit harder. I’m thrust into the choreographed mass . . . The sun peeks over the mountains; it rises, taking forever. Children join the crowd again after napping through the sonic filigree of A major. The dancing grows muted, but only for a moment— G major and the final poesías de bravata are on their way; you can feel it. I’m hungry, but I don’t want to go; I know it’s about to end. Suddenly, the air becomes damp, the sky overcast, and the morning is now steamy from the dew— daybreak. Sunlight slowly begins to wrap around everyone and everything. The space of performance is, more than anything, a space of intimacy in which people, performance, and the space itself are unbound, surpassing the boundaries of one’s own body.”

June 2025 @natlhumanities. Grateful for the opportunity to think through salient questions around citizenship, race, and belonging central to my book in process, but most importantly central to the Latinx community in these brutal times. This is not the first time we’ve been targeted and scapegoated, as I often remind students in the classroom. And as I thought, read, and wrote this past month, I too was reminded of the many brave acts of refusal that have been vital to my community’s survival. Thankful for the time, space, beauty, and friendships. Adelante. taken in National Humanities Center by @___caminante___
