Yesterday I graduated with my Masters in Forensic Science. This has been my dream for as long as I can remember! I am officially done with classes and ended the semester off with a 4.0. Dear young black girl who doesn’t see herself reflected yet,

I was told more than once that I wouldn’t succeed.
That I wasn’t moving fast enough.
That maybe this path wasn’t meant for me.

There were rooms where people didn’t want to be my lab partner,
where my presence was questioned before my work ever was.

I stayed anyway.
I kept studying.
I kept showing up.

And if you’ve ever wondered why it can feel so lonely here,
one report found African Americans earned only about 1.7% of chemistry doctorates.
So no, it’s not just you.

Let this be proof that you don’t need permission to belong in science.
You don’t need to shrink, soften, or explain your brilliance.

This robe is evidence.

To the girls coming behind me,

As this year comes to a close, I look back on the moments that shaped it, the pivots, the pauses, and the purpose behind them.

May 3rd was meant to mark my graduation, a date already written into my family’s legacy. It’s also the day my father earned his bachelor’s degree, a milestone we chose to honor and celebrate together.

The ceremony was postponed, but the foundation, the work, and the purpose were not. May 3rd became a weekend of recognition, reflection, and gratitude.

Grounded in what was built before me, supported throughout the journey, and prepared for what’s next.

To my parents, thank you for believing in me before I had the words, for steadying me when the process tested me, and for teaching me how to finish what I start.

**LONG POST** BEFORE THIS YEAR END I WANT TO THANK GOD!

This has been the hardest experience of my life and that’s not something I say lightly.
This journey tested me in ways I couldn’t explain while I was living through it.

So many setbacks, so many obstacles!

One of the worst experiences was during my second year when I had to complete my candidacy examination. I failed.

However, I was given one more chance to get it right. I was so anxious knowing everything I worked for could end right there. I spent months preparing and focusing while carrying fear, pressure, and doubt but pushing through as much as I could. After 4 months of preparation, I passed.

Fast forward to my last year in my program, when I was preparing for my dissertation defense. The date kept getting pushed back time and time again. Each delay felt like starting over emotionally, bracing myself again while the finish line kept moving.

There were seasons of isolation. Seasons where surviving mattered more than succeeding. Where showing up was the victory and confidence had to be rebuilt quietly, day by day.

This degree wasn’t earned through perfection. It was earned through perseverance. Through staying when walking away felt justified. Through discipline, faith, and refusing to quit on myself.

And today, I don’t walk alone.
I walk crowned by the people who made sacrifices long before this moment was mine.

This is more than a degree.
It’s proof that setbacks don’t get the final say.
That delays are not denials.
That resilience carries farther than fear ever could.

This walk is loud but graceful. Thank you GOD! I am finally a DOCTOR!
