Lucio Battisti - Il Veliero
La Batteria, Il Contrabbasso, Eccetera
Label: Numero Uno, 1976

Decided to do an Italian series because of a side project I'm working on. Lucio Battisti stands out to me because he let his work speak for itself. He was shy, and reluctant to talk about himself and his work. In the early 1980s he declared he would no longer make public appearances nor release any interviews: in his words "[he was going to] speak no more, since an artist must communicate with the public only through his work."

And yet, he was and continues to be one of the most influential Italian songwriters of all time. In 1983, Llama did an italo cover of this song, and in 2014, Roisin Murphy covered "Ancora Tu" from this same album.

Move D - To The Disco '77
Electric Minds, 2013

Late night groover reminiscent of Move D's Kunststof (1995). First heard this at a Minimal Bar in Berlin back in early 2017, and have been in love with it ever since. Enjoy!

Not much needs to be said about this track. One of the best house records ever made, on the year house music was born. Enjoy (:

Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
Westbound Records, 1971

My absolute favorite Eddie Hazel solo 😁
The title track of the last album recorded by the original Funkadelic lineup, and Eddie Hazel at his absolute best. This 10 minute solo is full of emotion and pain. George Clinton, who asked Eddie to play as if his mother had just died. Clinton instructed him ā€œto picture that day, what he would feel, how he would make sense of his life, how he would take a measure of everything that was inside him and let it out through his guitarā€

Writing forĀ PopMatters, Yuval Taylor called the album ā€œone of the loudest, darkest, most intense records ever madeā€, and stated that the group ā€œcaptured the odor of the age, the stench of death and corruption, the weary exhalation of America at its lowest.ā€

Unfortunately, the band disbanded after this record was released. Half of the band was fired, or quit, for different reasons, from drugs to money.

Enjoy this timeless masterpiece.

Marvin Gaye - Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)
Label: Tamla, 1971

I’ve been super into the year 1971 lately. Apple did an entire docs-series on it, called ā€œ1971: The Year Music Changed Everything.ā€ It might be a bit hyperbolic, but it was definitely an impactful year. If you read the description of my last post, and how important that album was, I believe that Marvin Gaye wrote an album of almost equal significance when it came to socio-political issues of that time.

ā€œWhat’s Going Onā€ would followed a time in Gaye’s life where he was becoming more introspective. Tammi Terrell, with whom he had a musical partnership, passed away in 1970. His marriage also collapsed. And with all of the turmoil in the world, Gaye wanted to make a statement: ā€œWhat mattered was the message. For the first time, I felt like I had something to say.ā€

The record was also important because it strayed from the norm. From an article by the Library of Congress:
ā€œWhile the album’s title song is easily the LP’s best known (and most revived), all of its cuts are integral to the whole. ā€œWhat’s Going Onā€ has been variously called a concept album or song cycle based upon the inter-relation of each of the album’s nine songs, both musically and lyrically, and the album’s uncommon production style of removing standard breaks between each song thus allowing them to flow uninterrupted from one to the next.ā€

It was recorded in only 10 days.

Gil Scott-Heron - The Revolution Will Not Be Televised
Flying Dutchman, 1971

The man often referred to as the ā€œgodfather of rap,ā€ Gil Scott-Heron wrote this beautiful poem and first released it in a book of his poetry called ā€œSmall Talk at 125th and Lenoxā€ in 1970. An earlier version of this song was recorded live with only percussion, and released in his first album with the same name as his book of poems. Scott-Heron re-recorded the piece a year later for his ā€œPieces of Manā€ LP. This version, which included a full band backing him, was released as the B-side to his single, the equally political ā€œHome is Where the Hatred Is.ā€

If you ask me, this is one of the most important songs ever written. Not only because of its musical excellence, and elegance (backed by musicians such as hall of fame drummer, Pretty Purdie). Or because of its heavy influence on slam poetry. And not only because it directly inspired the generation who became the first rappers, or because of the way that it exposes mass consumerism and the unhealthiness of television.

No, it’s most important because it inspired minorities to rise up against police brutality and a racist government. During a time when the civil rights movement had began to fade, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised became an anthem. It was a catalyst that called to action for the Black community to stay focused on social justice efforts even when mainstream attention wanes. He reminded people that the ambitions of the movement hadn’t been realized. There was still a lot to be done.

It has withstood the test of time, and continued to inspire protesters even to this day. When I was marching during the George Floyd protests in 2020, I could hear cars blasting it as they drove along side us.

Gil Scott-Heron is an artist of almost unparalleled influence, especially when it comes to encouraging and influencing young minorities. His spoken word poems and social commentary backed by a musical beat was the spark that lit the flame for an entirely new genre of music. āœŠšŸ¾āœŠšŸæāœŠšŸ»

Cortex - I Heard a Sigh
Album: Inedit '79 (live record)
Label: Underdog Records, 2006
Released in Japan

In 1973, pianist and arranger Alain Mion, alongside drummer Alain Gandolfi, gave birth to the French Jazz-Funk band Cortex. They only released two albums, but that was enough to help them reach cult status around the world, and become the most samples band in France. With legends like MF Doom, Madlib and Wiz Khalifa using their music to help create their beats. They have an almost mythical reputation. No Wikipedia page, and there’s not much information about Mireille Dalbray, the band’s singer whose ethereal vocals serve as the highlight of so many Cortex-sampling compositions. But that mystery adds to their appeal.
