Join us this Saturday for the FINISSAGE of the exhibition:

THE ART OF BORDER SABOTAGE
– ECHOES FROM THE EDGES

Saturday, July 18, 2026
from 18:00

Concert at 19:00 with Sultan Molu and Ali Temiz

The exhibition explored the contemporary European border regime and the challenges migrants face in their everyday lives. At the same time, it proposed alternative possibilities for coexistence and invited audiences to rethink the border beyond its geographical meaning - as a psychological, social, cultural, technological, and aesthetic regime that shapes visibility, mobility, belonging, and exclusion.

Holding political urgency and poetic ambiguity together, the exhibition asked whether art can create temporary breaches within systems that appear immovable. Rather than offering simple answers, it unsettled dominant narratives, exposed contradictions, and opened spaces for encounter where borders seek to prevent them.

Border sabotage was understood as a poetic and aesthetic gesture - an interruption of fixed identities and dominant histories. A space where fragmented voices, suppressed memories, and alternative forms of belonging continue to resonate across walls, waters, languages, and generations.

„Asmara 1975“
If walls could talk, they would whisper of the moments when the world held its breath.

It was a night in 1975 – one of many. Eritrea’s capital was sinking into the brutal terror of the Ethiopian regime, leaving behind the traumatic heritage of an entire people. Walls like this stood as the final, silent witnesses to the lives and survival of so many in Asmara. What may look like abstract art or the raw decay of stone is, in truth, the visual echo of a collective wound.

To photograph is to fracture the boundaries of memory. Here, my camera transforms into an instrument against oblivion, transcending the axis of time.

The large-format works of the “Asmara 1975” series do not trace this history linearly; instead, they capture it as a fleeting, crimson atmosphere born of emotional imagery.
They are textures wrought from pain, faded recollections, and layers of time – carried by the generations of a nation whose voices must remain audible through art.

„Asmara 1975“

“Asmara 1975”
It was a night in 1975—one of many. Eritrea’s capital sank into the cruel terror of the Ethiopian regime, leaving behind a traumatic memory for many. These are memories that, through stories, continue to haunt the next generation.

The large-format works of my ongoing series “Asmara 1975” do not show this history linearly, but rather as a fleeting, reddish atmosphere of emotional images. How do you show memories of a past that you have subconsciously absorbed as fragments? There are no clear chronologies, only shadows and feelings.

Tracing the past with a camera: I often waited until an image appeared before me that resembled my memories and the stories told. Scenes that seem to be straight out of a film.
Flashbacks—pure déjà vu.

Photographing to break through the boundaries of memory.

“Asmara 1975”
I stood for a long time in front of a house where the unthinkable once happened. Some places carry a weight that cannot be captured in sharp details. This piece captures the raw feeling—heavy, red, unforgotten.

No glass, no frame, unprotected. Mounted directly onto the wall.Just like the essence of the image itself.

It is one of four works currently on display as part of the group exhibition:

ART OF BORDER SABOTAGE – ECHOES FROM THE EDGES.

„Asmara 1975“

ART OF BORDER SABOTAGE – ECHOES FROM THE EDGES zu sehen sind.

Fiat Tagliero is a gas station and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Asmara, the capital of Eritrea. The building which was built in 1938 in a futuristic style resembles an airplane taking off. The tower in the middle supports two huge, 15 m high, cantilevered reinforced concrete wings. The gas station is probably one of the most photographed buildings in Asmara.
