Anders, who speaks openly about holding a German passport and near-total freedom of movement, frames her work @thespace.city around a line from psychoanalyst François Tosquelles, who argued that the first human right is the right to wander the earth. For Anders, that freedom is not something to hold onto individually. It is something that should belong to everyone.The multimedia installation grew out of a collaboration with Mohadeseh Salehinasab, an Iranian actress who fled her country, and who asked Anders to retrace parts of her escape route through Greece with her. Join us this Saturday for the FINISSAGE of the exhibition:THE ART OF BORDER SABOTAGE – ECHOES FROM THE EDGESSaturday, July 18, 2026from 18:00Concert at 19:00 with Sultan Molu and Ali TemizThe exhibition explored the contemporary European border regime and the challenges migrants face in their everyday lives. At the same time, it proposed alternative possibilities for coexistence and invited audiences to rethink the border beyond its geographical meaning - as a psychological, social, cultural, technological, and aesthetic regime that shapes visibility, mobility, belonging, and exclusion.Holding political urgency and poetic ambiguity together, the exhibition asked whether art can create temporary breaches within systems that appear immovable. Rather than offering simple answers, it unsettled dominant narratives, exposed contradictions, and opened spaces for encounter where borders seek to prevent them.Border sabotage was understood as a poetic and aesthetic gesture - an interruption of fixed identities and dominant histories. ZWEI LEEREN SIND EIN GANZES, DAZWISCHEN SPRICHT DAS ICH, 2026byNICK WACHS @wachsworldwide Nick Wachs (*2000, Hamburg) lebt und arbeitet in Hamburg. Wachs studiert Malerei an der Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (HfbK). In meiner Arbeit beschäftige ich mich mit Wahrnehmungsräumen, in denen Fragen nach dem Menschsein und seinen existenziellen Dimensionen überhaupt erst gestellt werden können. Emotion und Transformation spielen dabei eine zentrale Rolle: Sie legen die Risse im Gefüge unserer Wirklichkeit frei und machen spürbar, wie brüchig und zugleich durchlässig der verzerrte Raum ist, in dem wir leben. Zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen, digitale und verschiedene Identitäten sowie der Himmel begleiten mich dabei als wiederkehrende Motive. Der Himmel erscheint als offenes Zeichen: Projektionsfläche, Abgrund, Versprechen. Er kann kalt und leer sein, ein nihilistischer Raum ohne Antwort – und zugleich Symbol für Transzendenz, Sehnsucht oder eine ganz konkrete, atmende Atmosphäre. In dieser Gleichzeitigkeit interessiert mich die Ambiguität, das Schweben zwischen Deutungsebenen.Meine Arbeiten verstehen sich als Einladungen: als Orte, an denen Resonanz entstehen kann – zwischen Körpern, Blicken, Geschichten. Work byGEORGES ADÉAGBO @georges.adeagboGeorges Adéagbo (1942 in Benin, then Dahomey) is a conceptual artist who has been developing hisown style of using found objects since the early 1970s in Cotonou, Benin. The vitrine shown at The Space // was part of a large assemblage he created for an exhibition at K21 in Düsseldorf in 2015. The title of the exhibition was called “The problem of God”.When out on walks he gathers items that have been lost or thrown away, and incorporates them into his installations. Adéagbo enriches his palette with acquired objects and works he has commissioned himself – sculptures, masks, pictures and text panels. As a result, episodes from his personal past interface with unusual interpretations of so-called objective historical scholarship, mainstream pop culture is juxtaposed with canonized high culture,and the banal confronts the profound in his works. Adéagbo avoids overly obvious interpretations of hiswork: ambiguity and entrapment are integral to his strategy of provocation.The artist also deliberately avoids those elements and facets expected of “African” artists – in some cases even presenting these expectations in a satirical light. Adéagbo’s works key into the process of coming to terms with the colonial era, explore the imperialistic claims of Western powers in mainland Africa, and pose questions about traces of colonialism still visible in European cities. From his perspective as an African ethnologist, Adéagbo studies the customs of each place at which he exhibits, and casts these as glaring clichés– a parallel to the way his own culture is often misrepresented.Please continue reading in comments: by @thespace.city

Works byROBIN RHODE @robinrhodeofficial With his research-based and socially engaged practice, Robin Rhode (b. 1976, Cape Town, South Africa; lives and works in Berlin) engages the urban landscape to create complex, symbolically rich narratives that disrupt and transform their environments.In his cross-media artistic practice, which encompasses sculpture, painting, photography, film, performance, and installation the artist references themes of cultural identity and the complex interaction of socio-political structures and individual freedom. In the tension between action and artwork, between playful spontaneity and profound confrontation, between the ephemeral and the permanent, he creates multi-layered visual worlds in which he develops his system of signs using everyday objects and often easy ways. At THE SPACE // the artist presents his works „African Sisyphus“ and „Lover’s Rock“ which he created at the Cederberg Mountain. The Body as Inscription: Robin Rhode’s Cederberg Photographs and the Poetics of Indigenous Geo-Ecology. In African Sisyphus, a lone figure braces against the underside of a colossal Cederberg sandstone boulder, body angled low, arms pressing into rock as though bearing geological weight. The pose is simultaneously heroic and absurd: the formation’s scale renders the body minute, its effort cosmically futile, yet the gesture carries mythic intentionality. Robin Rhode has long cast the human body as instrument and protagonist — a figure that draws, animates, and is reshaped by the surfaces it inhabits. Transposed from the urban wall to primordial stone, that grammar undergoes a radical revision. The body is no longer author; it is supplicant. The Cederberg is not neutral terrain. Works bySTEFFEN JOPP @steffenjoppSteffen Jopp, born in 1991 in Iserlohn, lives and works in Düsseldorf. As a master student of Gregor Schneider, he completed his studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf between 2016 and 2022.Jopp’s artistic practice revolves around themes such as vulnerability and self-protection, reflecting his engagement with the human and global condition. His works often question societal norms and delve into personal emotions.Artiststatement Steffen Jopp dated February 28th, 2025 at 08:27 pm:From the very beginning, my work has centered on my own skin— as a membrane, surface, shield, and emotional mirror. I find it both fascinating and unsettling that this organ protects me and separates me from the physical world, yet at the same time, it exposes me—often mercilessly—leaving me vulnerable.My practice is driven by the idea that virtuality is an inherent part of reality and that digitality can exist independently of technological machinery—perhaps it always has. I see no fundamental distinction between these realms, much like the fluid boundaries between interior and exterior spaces or the transitions between different places.As I move through life, I sense a continuous shift between internal and external states. In crossing membranes, thresholds, and zones, I experience a constant recalibration of my self-perception—almost as if I were a sample being read from the periphery. In a way, that’s exactly what is happening.I approach my work in the same way—producing it as a process of mapping and scanning, a sequence of stations leading through me from the outside in, and vice versa. SONGS OF FALLING WATER, 2025byTAQWA ALI @taqwabnali Taqwa Ali is an interdisciplinary artist born in Sudan in 1997, living and working in The Netherlands. Her material-based research framework understands matter as a site of epistemological inquiry, rather than a neutral medium of expression in artistic practices. Her practice departs from “material as intelligence” through which she investigates embodied histories of extraction, circulation, and cultural meaning. Through embodied processes and layered material experimentation, the work examines landscapes (often within her home country Sudan) as archives shaped by displacement, ecological conditions, and socio-political forces. Ali uses materials such as hibiscus, Arabic gum, soil, clay, and water to propose materials as both witness and agents capable of holding intimate narratives, while situating these materials as mediators of memory and translocational experiences within Sudan and the Netherlands. Her work spans painting, installation and sculpture where she critically engages with the socio-political and historical conditions embedded in these materials.Ali gained a bachelor in Interdisciplinary arts from Maastricht institute of arts NL, and is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Arts, Cognitive sciences and Criticism at Rijksuniversity Groningen. In 2025 she was awarded The Royal Award for Modern painting in The Netherlands, and the Henriette hustinx prize in 2023.
