today, i turn 31. if you’ve stuck around for my past few swings around the sun, you’re probably aware of the sentimental droning that’s a few sentences ahead. if you’re new here, though, i hope you’ll forgive me for deviating from the standard motions of event flyers or music content. i assure you, this layover is a brief one and we’ll be sky-bound again shortly. as i approach one full year of Transmission so close to my own birthday, i’ve thought about the metrics we use to evaluate our milestones. i’ve spent time writing these metrics out so i can take stock of what we’ve done since we opened: hundreds of shows, fundraisers, showcases, community events, artists platformed, jobs created, and a staggering number of attendees. in isolation, these data points don’t do much for me. so much of who i am is tied to this space - our mission, story, the people who make it possible, the communities who i have the privilege of serving. i want this carousel post, as in past birthdays, to remind myself that there’s more than just these numbers that you’ll hear about on some other day. some figures are just as significant even if they aren’t as far reaching. my first full year as a cancer survivor, 1,250 days of sobriety, hundreds of new faces that have lit up my life. as immensely challenging this past year has been, it’s left me with thousands of reasons to be grateful. all of this to say that i’m not interested in the Potemkin villages that we’re often compelled to build. make no mistake, the sheer difficulty and stress this year have at times been all consuming in ways that made my cancer diagnosis last year seem like a light breeze. this yearly reflection feels more important now than in the past. the moments i’ve collected capture a joy that i want to archive so i don’t forget how fulfilling this life is between the peaks and valleys. they remind me that i made it this far. thanks for reading and please say hi to me at the anniversary so i can thank you myself. if you’ve gotten this far (or even if you haven’t): i love you, unclench your jaw, relax your shoulders, and go outside to feel the warm air on your skin a few more times before the season’s out. a lovely team taken in Washington D. We’ve spent months curating this lineup to take you through a sonic journey spanning the wide array of sounds that have found home at Transmission. In the past year, our goal has been to showcase excellence across genre, and tens of thousands of you showed up to that end.
