Alphonse: The ‘See Me In 3D’ Ransom Note Mix

Toby Tobias has been making music under a run of aliases since 1992, but Alphonse is the one that goes right back to the roots - a sampler, some amen breaks, and whatever he could catch on Kiss FM and in the raves.

His latest, “Spirit of the Night” with Seraphina Simone, took its time. Written in a single session at Glastonbury in 2017, it sat through lockdown and a new baby before finally landing as a late-night acid house record — now out in four different mixes on Ransom Note Records.

We locked him in for a mix and a chat about Croydon, Cybotron, and why he can’t stop making tunes.

Alphonse & Seraphina Simone’s ‘Spirit of the Night’ EP is out now, exclusively on Beatport.

Four takes on one late-night idea from @_toby_tobias_ aka @__alphonse_____ and @seraphinasimone - born at Glastonbury 2017, finished years later once Toby worked out what it actually wanted to be: acid house built around a 303 line and Seraphina’s vocal.

You’re listening to the Stutter Dub - the deepest one on the EP. Seraphina’s vocal chopped and rearranged over a dark, percussive house track that pulls straight from Toby’s Croydon roots. In his own words, it’s the “dark crystal in the pack.”

Main Mix, Acid Freak Dub, Pigeon Dub and Stutter Dub - all four out exclusively on Beatport now.

Out today! We’ve known @_toby_tobias_ aka Alphonse for a very long time, longer than he’s been sitting on this creation with @seraphinasimone. The pair first crossed paths at Glastonbury 2017 and knocked out a set of lyrics over a single session. Life did what life does - lockdowns, a baby, other projects - and the track went through several incarnations before Toby zeroed in on what it actually was: a late-night acid house record built around the 303 line and Seraphina’s unmistakable vocals.

The Main Mix is where it started. Raw acid wave, heavy on vocals, the original 2017 idea more or less intact. The message is straightforward: Spirit of the Night.

[Emotional] Especial reaches a true landmark with its 50th release. Started as a dancier, trippier, club friendly spin off, sub label to Emotional Response.

As with every 10th release on the label, here is a various artists “Showcase” of what and where the label is, featuring exclusive music by 53X and Alphonse, plus special remixes by label mainstay, Jamie Paton.

Recent signing, 53X opens with the bounce of Radar. Finland’s Jonne Lydén debut EP on Especial, Zen ’23 came out of nowhere, his all live analogue symphonies drop the bpms, presenting widescreen beats, darkroom bass, sirens and tripped out vox all mixed to propel a singularly driven sound.

Taking things much deeper has been the hallmark of Jamie Paton’s remixes for the label.

First, he reworks rising star DJ, but recent break out producer Chez De Milo, with a trademark dub excursion taking the ethnic origins of Kremer to a space is the dub place.

Alphonse rightfully returns to Especial, with Raze Rave highlighting the allusive producers’ unique understanding of the varied history of rave culture via a techno-suite of soundscapes, perfecting mixing uplifting breaks, memory inducing vocal samples and dub bass, with a nod to the pop sensibility that rave encompassed, while being that allusive “lost chord” moment of man and machine.

The finale returns to the trance acid expanse of 53X, with the mastery of label stalwart Jamie Paton. An apt marriage, Paton takes the title cut from Lydén’s debut EP and crafts another (e)special durge-dub, where TB303 and Space Echo intertwine with the De Witte vocal, hinting at touches of dub, new wave, trance and acid house all in one melting pot, the label optimistically termed “Protoid” back at inception of summer 2013.

A few stills from a video of my track Beechwood -which came out a few years back -but it dawned on me that the video went under the radar -it was filmed and edited by @maghreban around lockdown - I just watched it again and it is a visual feast -I have put a load of stills up from it and the yt link is in the bio -

This track has since been one of my most popular releases with DJs and dancers alike on @klassewrecks

I ve been very busy in the studio finishing lots of work which will reach a dancefloor very soon (you may have heard some sneak peaks out and about over the summer )
