![Nayakan (also spelled Nayagan) is a landmark 1987 Indian Tamil-language epic crime drama film written and directed by Mani Ratnam and starring Kamal Haasan. Widely considered one of the greatest masterpieces in Indian cinema history, the film is loosely based on the real life of the Mumbai underworld don Varadarajan Mudaliar alongside narrative inspirations from The Godfather. [1, 2, 3]
🎬 Plot Overview
The story follows the tragic evolution of Sakthivel "Velu" Naicker. After witnessing his father's brutal murder by a corrupt policeman during his childhood, a young Velu retaliates by killing the officer and fleeing to Bombay. Adopted by a kind resident in the slums of Dharavi, he grows up to become a powerful, highly revered crime lord. Driven by a desire to protect his vulnerable migrant community from systemic exploitation, his law-defying rise to absolute power extracts a devastating psychological and personal toll on his family. [1, 2]
🌟 Key Details & Legacy
