In this review, Morny Li writes about This Candy Has Teeth, curated by Shuhan Zhang in New York. Moving through familiar objects, bodily sensations, and memories of childhood, Li considers how sweetness and tenderness coexist with structure, distance, and resistance. Rather than treating childhood as a lost space of innocence, After the Sweetness asks what becomes visible when we revisit these memories as adults, when softness begins to reveal its edges, intimacy its conditions, and memory its distance.

Meet Cindy Zhaoyue Chen (she/her), a recent MFA graduate in Ceramics 🌟

@__cin_diii

Cindy Chen’s work explores the tension between comfort and unease through sculptures and installations inspired by toys, amusement rides, consumer objects, and childhood memories. Drawing from the visual language of cuteness, she examines how seemingly innocent forms can simultaneously attract, disarm, and conceal more complex emotions.

Working with ceramics, digital fabrication, found materials, and soft surfaces, she creates immersive environments that blur the boundaries between fantasy and reality. Her playful yet unsettling worlds invite viewers to reconsider their relationships with nostalgia, desire, vulnerability, and control.

Through her thesis exhibition, What a Wonderful Dream, Chen reimagines cuteness not as innocence, but as a powerful and complicated force capable of shaping how we see, remember, and connect with the world around us.
