I met Erin and Riley completely by chance at the summer Berlinale.

I was helping a friend find people to interview when they walked into the open-air cinema. They were some of the first people to arrive, and there was something about them that immediately caught my eye. Their style, the way they carried themselves, how comfortable they seemed in their own skin. They had this beautiful, authentic energy that made them feel instantly approachable.

After the interview we sat together for a while while they enjoyed their picnic in the front row, shared a cigarette, chatted, and something just clicked. We exchanged IG handles, and I remember thinking: this is how I used to find the people I wanted to photograph.

Lately I’d been trying so hard to organise shoots that I’d almost forgotten how much I love simply meeting people first and feeling inspired by who they are.

A few days later we met again on one of those impossibly still Berlin evenings, just before a summer storm. So still that the cigarette smoke barely moved.

Photographing them felt effortless. There is so much trust, care and tenderness between the two of them that it naturally found its way into the pictures.

Afterwards we ended the evening together at a Biergarten. It was their last night in Berlin, and somehow it also felt like the beginning of me finding my way back to photographing people the way I always loved doing it.

Lately, I’ve been trying so hard to create the perfect shoot that I’d forgotten what has always mattered most to me: observing people, connecting with them, and letting their energy, personality, and aesthetic inspire the images.
I hadn’t picked up my camera in almost a month. Erin and Riley reminded me why I love to do what I do and that I still have it in me 🥹
