In 2024 649 women in the United States died due to childbirth birth related complications. 80% of these deaths were considered preventable. In 2023 20,005 babies died due to persistent disparities in this country related to race and a lack of access to prenatal care.

In Shelby county 25-30% of pregnant women receive inadequate prenatal care, with the highest rates being within the medical deserts of this county. Between both North and South Memphis there is an estimated 7-10 clinics that offer OB care. These areas encompass some of Memphis’s lowest income communities. Between East Memphis and Germantown there are over 10 OBGYN clinics, where the average household income is 3-5 times higher.

For the past 3 years I have felt privileged to serve the women of this community. Every moment I have spent with every patient has been an honor. To all the women who lost their lives, to all the parents who lost a child, and to all of the women who have not felt seen or heard, this is for you. taken in UT Health Sciences by @__kelseyd
