I am relieved to introduce my new full-length, Howling World — starting with its title track today, which is streaming everywhere. The full record itself is out Oct 23rd.

This song was inspired by René Magritte’s strange painting ‘Young Girl Eating a Bird’ (last slide). I don’t know what Magritte intended, but I was compelled by this image of someone turning away from the world while simultaneously devouring it.

That’s really the heart of the record and why it’s coming out during the spooky season: how to live in the world with all its darkness, awe, and transformation.

Thanks so much to my dear friend Eva @nighttime666 for contributing violin and viola to this song — and more magical strings and vocals to several others — and to my pal Miles Hewitt @mileshew for his foundational bass playing here and on almost all the rest.

*Both these folks have fantastic new records out right now, btw, so give ’em a whirl!

There’ll be a couple more singles, plenty of weird little videos, a real music video, and finally, on October 23, the record itself.

Howling World is available to pre-order on vinyl (and digital) in a limited run of 100 — links in the bio.

Much obliged!

The vinyl is here—and it looks and sounds great! You can preorder at KINHANA.BANDCAMP.COM or through the link in my bio. If we know each other and you’re in the area, you can also buy a copy directly from me.

A huge thank-you to my friend Elisa Penello (@eeelisa) for the generous time, effort, and creativity she put into designing the whole package. I love how it came together. She also rescued two 35mm photos I’d lost the negatives and high-res scans for, restoring them to print quality.

I took the cover photo at my old place in Kingston; it’s now a little memorial to the backyard garden there. The back cover is from the month I spent at a friend’s cabin during Covid, when I first tried to record this album. It brings me back to a strange, uncertain time—and to the beginning of this record.

A special thank-you to my friend Yu Yang (@fishsheep88) for the illustration she made for the insert. She drew it while listening to the title track, and I think it fits the themes perfectly.

Howling World is out next Friday, 10/23. If you’ve already ordered, I’ll ship your record next week. Thanks :) by @__kin_hana__

‘Earthrise’— the second single off Howling World — is streaming everywhere today. Here’s the full video directed by my friend Marjorie LeWit @marjoriedirects

I’ve been trying to write this song for a long time. It started with the Earthrise photograph Bill Anders took during Apollo 8 in 1968, as Earth appeared above the lunar horizon. Anders later called it the “first real view of our home planet,” describing Earth as “very fragile and very delicate.” It was the first time humans had seen Earth rise above another world, and Anders’ photograph gave everyone else that view.

Somewhere along the way, that became tangled up with my obsession with Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ (also 1968) and this imagined conversation about the film between the astronauts as they looked back at Earth.

Marge made the video using archival NASA footage and material drawn largely from Donald Fox’s 1970 public-domain experimental film ‘Omega.’ I’m very grateful to her for taking all of that strange, beautiful footage and making something that feels so completely connected to the song.

Kristen Drymala ( @kristendrymala ) plays cello and Miles Hewitt ( @mileshew ) plays bass. I’m really grateful to both of them for what they brought to it. Their playing gave the song a depth and warmth I couldn’t have gotten to on my own.

I’ve been carrying this song — and that framed picture — around for a while. I’m glad it finally gets to exist outside of me.
