When Dreams Were Too Expensive to Dream

I grew up in a home where dreams had price tags we couldn’t afford to look at.
Middle-class India doesn’t teach you to want impossible things. You learn early—dream within boundaries. Dream of stability, not spectacles. Dream of comfort, not the cosmos dancing in foreign skies.

Iceland existed only in screensavers and travel documentaries I’d stumble upon late at night. The Northern Lights? That was for other people. People with passports that weren’t dusty. People whose parents didn’t calculate grocery bills twice. People who said “let’s go to Iceland” the way we said “let’s go to the local temple.”

I remember being sixteen, watching a show about the aurora borealis on Discovery. The screen glowed green and purple, and I felt something crack open inside me—a wanting so pure it hurt. My mother walked by, saw me staring, and said, “Nice, no? Now go sleep, its late.”

That was the unspoken rule: admire, but don’t ache for it. Again, you never know what mahadev planned for you 🥰❤️

And the feeling when I witnessed the green sky? Beyond my vocabulary 🫠

I had friends. I just didn’t have travel friends.

For years I travelled solo and genuinely loved it. The freedom, the wrong turns, the strangers who fed me. But there were evenings I’d see something ridiculous….. a sky, a valley, a very confident Icelandic dog… and have nobody to turn to and say “are you seeing this.”

It was never my friends’ fault. They had lives. Jobs, weddings, a cousin’s engagement, an EMI. That’s not flakiness, that’s just being 28 in India.

Somewhere in the middle of all that I realised the person who’d love this exact trip exists. Same free weekend, same budget, same tolerance for 6am starts. We just have no way of finding each other before the trip.

So we built one. Travellers find their tribe, local hosts bring the experiences, and the trip you kept postponing actually happens. That’s the whole thing.

I hv always considered myself as late bloomer traveller.

For souls who want to trade weekend Netflix for Northern Lights. For the ones craving that “ghar bhi yaha hota” feeling in unknown towns.

GoWeekender isn’t just a platform—it’s for late bloomers, dreamers, the ones who finally said “enough” to waiting.

Because the perfect moment? It’s always now.

Join my tribe—early access link in bio. Let’s turn your “someday” into “real soon.”

Sometimes, all you need is a night sky full of auroras to feel wonder again. Grateful for moments like this—reminding me that the world still has magic in store. Is aurora in your bucketlist too? by @__lensofdiscovery

Every 11:11, I wished for something different. Turns out, I was just wishing my way toward the same thing—peace.
