I THINK GOD LIVES IN EASTBOURNE premieres on 30th March in Eastbourne at @crossingthescreen , returning home for its entry into the world.

I visited Eastbourne for the first time in 2022 with @viewsfromtheviewfinder for a hike along the cliffs. It was the day before Storm Eunice, so wet and windy that Adi ended up slipping on the muddy trail and twisting his ankle.

While looking for help, I came across an old man curled up and sleeping in a circular depression in the ground by the edge of the cliff (the 2nd photo is me in this spot during a later trip). I remarked at the time how incredibly strange this was. I walked on and when I returned to the bench, found that same old man sitting with Adi.

He told us about the movement of the wind, how it plays tricks on you, bouncing against the cliff face and pushing you towards the edge. He told us about the sea, how it eats away at the rock and land, about the drama between the boats at sea that he eavesdrops on using his walkie-talkie.

Then he told us about the first dead body he ever saw, washed up on the beach while crab fishing at 14-years-old. He told us that this spot we were all sat at, was one of the top 3 sites in the world for suicide. The man was a guardian, someone who talks people down when they are on the edge.

We later learned that many guardians are people who have jumped from the cliffs themselves and survived.

Funnily, Eastbourne is also the sunniest place in the UK. As we visited Eastbourne more frequently over the next few years, we ended up meeting several locals who at a dire time in their lives ‘accidentally’ ended up in Eastbourne and had their lives changed - for the better.

One of the locals that we had a particular connection to was @jenniferpaterson1111 , the pier tarot reader, who was drawn to Eastbourne in a very synchronistic way - through her narration we unravel the power of nature in a place where emotions are heightened and death is close.

This short documentary is an homage to Eastbourne, a place where coincidence, discovery, despair, and faith collide, a town not of death but of life and regeneration.
