Things that try to look like things often do look more like things than things. Well-known fact.

Been getting into photography the last few weeks. Lots of learning, lots of out of focus images... but sometime you nail the photo or the composition and makes it worth it

Hakea laurina (Pincushion hakea) or the by the Noongar name (the traditional owners of the South-West of WA) kodjet or kojet. Image shows the different stages of the flower coming into bloom.

Hakea – after Baron Christian von Hake, a botanist. orthorrhyncha – Greek 'ortho' meaning straight, and 'rhyncos' meaning beak and referring to the fruit.

laurina - (Latin) from laurus = bay or laurel tree; plus inus - like.

I got a new job... not as many plants these days, but more environmental management.

This is a drone shot of a bridge construction I am doing in the Great Southern Region of WA. It shows the effectiveness of silt curtains or silt screens.

They assist in limiting oils, and hydrocarbons from petrol etc getting into the surrounding environment. Done correctly they can be extremely effective. But installed and managed poorly, they are as useful and a waterproof teabag.

On a ground level it can really be hard to see their effectiveness, hence why we sent up a drone to have a better look.

You may see the build up of oils etc on the right hand side (upstream). These are oils and petrols which have travelled downstream to the construction site where it has been caught by the silt curtain. I think it really shows the build up of pollutants which goes into rivers which we not necessarily can see.

Berry Reserve, Western Australia.
Not a bad spot. If I had shorts on I would have taken a quite dip in the flowing creek.
At this point I knew I was a bit lost though and had to figure out where the hell I was in relation to my car.

Next time... take a GPS taken in Berry Reserve Gidgegannup Off Reen Road by @__rasmusthegreat

Beaufortia sparsa (Swamp bottlebrush)
The beaufortia species is part of the Myrtaceae family, a small genus of about 22 species, all of which occur naturally only in south Western Australia. The genus is often referred to as bottlebrushes. While most beaufortia species are found in sand plains and in heath, Beaufortia sparsa is usually found amongst marshes and swamps in the southwest of Western Australia, hence its typical name swamp bottlebrush. Although not considered specific bottlebrush plants, their vibrant flower clusters resemble those of the Callistemon. They are related to the more familiar Melaleuca, both genera having stamens joined into clusters. The difference between the genera is in the arrangement of the anthers (the pollen-bearing structures of the flowers). Beaufortia's are basifixed, meaning the anthers and stamens are attached at the base. Whereas Melaleuca's, the anthers are connected along their sides (versatile).

Beaufortia: after Mary, Duchess of Beaufort (1630–1715), who maintained botanic gardens at Badminton and Chelsea in England

Sparsa: derived from the Latin word, meaning scattered, referring to the species being scattered in swamps taken in Denmark, Western Australia by @__rasmusthegreat

Eucalyptus preissiana (Bell-fruited mallee): Between 700 and 900 species of Eucalyptus endemic to Australia. Amazingly, over 50 per cent of them are known as mallees. The sprawling mallee E. preissiana can grow to approximately five meters high. The Bell-fruited Mallee flowers in winter and spring, followed by the most attractive large, bell-shaped gumnuts, giving Eucalyptus preissiana its common name.

Native to the southern and coastal IBRA regions of Avon Wheatbelt, Esperance Plains, Jarrah Forest.

Eucalyptus (Greek), meaning well and calyptos (Greek), meaning covered, refers to the cap covering the developing flowers.

preissiana after JA Ludwig Preiss (1811 - 1883), botanical collector.

Part of me is thinking it's a dig at me, to "brush up on your botany skills, loser!"
