Devastating and heartbreaking.
The baroque flute in the French Baroque repertoire is a carrier of deep and devastating emotions… the betrayals and complaints… these are more than pieces of music, they are real carriers of emotions from the 18th century… still relatable today.

With my dearest @hyerine.l on viola da gamba and @siby.llee on the harpsichord.

🎶#NFA2026 🇺🇸 Convention Concert
what an incredible day it was, to play for old friends I haven’t seen in years and for new friends I just met.
This truly was a very special moment for me.

Many thanks and bravo to @paolarincones and @danielpardomusic for putting spotlights on the baroque flute, with so many baroque flute related events at the convention !!
And of course thank you @cembalo418 for being so incredible and playing beautifully ♥️

Little did Michel Blavet knew, that 300 later we’d have a flute convention with 2000 attendees, and still play his music on the instruments he knew … 🎶🪈

Thank you all ♥️

📸Thankkkk youuuu so much @nicholasflute for these amazing photos 💕

🎂 Happy birthday, Friedrich Kuhlau
(1786–1832)

Why did this pianist and composer, whom we have almost certainly all played, write SO much music for the flute?

The flute was already part of his life from childhood: his father was a flutist and gave him his first lessons.

But Kuhlau soon discovered something else — the flute was hugely popular (contrary to what we might believe today), and publishers, professional flutists and enthusiastic amateurs were constantly asking him for new music.

In fact, in a 1829 letter, Kuhlau complained to his Parisian publisher Aristide Farrenc that he was being asked to write yet another set of flute duets! 😁

As the flute became increasingly popular among amateurs (perhaps the amateur instrument par excellence) Kuhlau ended up leaving us an extraordinary amount of flute repertoire: his works fill 62 volumes in the modern complete edition of his flute music.

Perhaps Kuhlau didn’t choose the flute…

But the flute world chose Kuhlau 🤘🏼🪈

Here on my wonderful copy of a 1830 Liebel flute.

This must be one of the coolest Menuets in the baroque flute repertoire.

It was composed by the French flautist and composer Pierre-Évrard Taillart, one of Michel Blavet’s most distinguished pupils. Taillart was considered to be on a level with his famous teacher and succeeded him at the Concert Spirituel in Paris.

But what makes this Menuet particularly fascinating is its style.

By the middle of the 18th century, Paris was increasingly exposed to new musical influences coming from Germany and Mannheim. Johann Baptist Wendling — one of the great flautists of the Mannheim school, a close friend of Mozart, and a musician who performed several times in Paris — was among the figures connected with this new musical language.

So here we have Taillart, a pupil of Blavet, working within a musical world that connects Paris with Mannheim, J. C. Bach and Mozart.

This is what makes the history of the flute so fascinating: everything is connected.
