Description: 48 public housing units in 14 months

Access cores are raised in concrete; the remaining areas – the apartments – are fully composed of volumetric modular steel units. While on-site works are well underway, the prefabricated modules are being manufactured in a controlled factory environment.

Once completed, the modules are transported to the site for rapid assembly, minimising disruption. In this case, the project is more like a script, where every step is anticipated to accelerate the building process. First, the preparation of the foundations and the central cores takes place. Then, the steel modules, completed offsite, are transported and placed.

Every two modules are connected through threaded rods with a 20 mm diameter, ensuring the stabilisation of the assembly. Once the procedure is complete for all the modules, it is time to waterproof the roofing, complete some last connections and install technical equipment.

669_Prefabrication Matters @au_magazine

"Architecture and construction are facing increasingly severe challenges – rising building costs, the need for environmental load countermeasures, a shortage of engineers and laborers, and the separation of design and construction. Meanwhile, the world’s population is growing every year, and the housing supply remains insufficient. In the pursuit of solutions, this issue focuses on the practices of 4 groups who are experimenting with prefabrication: SUMMARY (Portugal), ELEMENTAL (Chile), Ensamble Studio (Spain), and People’s Architecture Office (China/United States). (...) What these innovators share is the belief that architecture is not only realized in the finished building; it is also the design of the process itself. Each of the initiatives documented here reflects the potential for prefabrication to address the changing needs of both architecture and the people it serves."

From the archive: images from our VDC #prefab project.
Even after six years, these fully factory-completed volumetric modules remain challenging yet engaging for us. Saving time on site still means hundreds of hours of quietly rewarding research and design beforehand.

4 Modular Kindergartens in Lisbon, designed by SUMMARY, @__summary__ redefines early childhood education spaces through modular construction. The project prioritizes efficiency, adaptability, and sustainability, using pre-fabricated concrete modules for rapid assembly and flexibility. Large open interiors with natural light and ventilation create comfortable learning environments, while the modular design allows for future expansion or relocation. The structures integrate seamlessly into their urban context, providing functional yet inviting spaces for children. With an emphasis on cost-effectiveness and durability, this project showcases the potential of modular architecture to address educational needs while maintaining architectural quality, environmental responsibility, and spatial innovation.
