Once, the land between the mountain and the road in Ambur was full of crops. Ask around and people still remember.

The Trespassers team heard that and decided the future on this wall shouldn't leave it behind.

The finished mural, The Harmonious Horizon, shows the village a few years from now, with farmland stretching out beneath the mountains, wind turbines and solar panels sitting right next to it. Nothing has been swapped out. It's the same place, carrying its memory forward.

Here them talk about the mural in their own words. Watch to know more about their first standalone wall mural project. Find the link in the bio to read more about the mural.

Look a bit closer!
'The River of Many Drops' embraces landscape as a collective consciousness formed through many individual perspectives, moving between the microcosm of the drop and the vastness of the river.

Collective Consciousness begins with the act of making together, where seven artists from Trespassers Collective enter the same canvas without a predetermined composition. The image emerges through memory, intuition and lived experience, allowing each gesture to respond to what is already present. Fragments of places, bodies, rituals, landscapes and everyday life move across the surface, with one image often finding its continuation in another artist’s gesture. The canvas becomes a shared landscape where individual experiences begin to shift into something collective, and where different temporalities and ways of seeing can exist simultaneously.

One artist starts a line on the wall, and someone else picks it up without asking why. A third finishes what neither of them planned. The Kerala-based collective, Trespassers, has built every mural this way, layer on layer, until the art belongs to everyone and no one.

For The Harmonious Horizon in Ambur, that process started on foot. The group walked through the village for days, watching daily life, sketching what stood in front of them. A handful of mud houses turned into the starting point for something bigger: what would this place look like just some years ahead?

Seen through a fisheye lens, a water body opens out to blue sky, mountains, and farmland, with the village sitting inside it.

The future they've painted looks like the one they walked through: kids on the ground, old men trading afternoon talk, a woman on her way to work. Wind turbines and solar panels sit alongside the houses and the fields, part of the place rather than a replacement for it.

The clouds carry time forward, caught in the solar panels, the turbines, the water tanks, and the windows, leading us to the same village in Ambur, just reimagined in the future.

The Harmonious Horizon

What does the future look like when it doesn’t erase what came before?

The mural imagines a village near Ambur a few years into the future, not as it is today, but as it could become. Before beginning, the Trespassers collective spent time in and around the village, walking through its streets, observing everyday life and sketching what they saw.

Once a small settlement of mud houses with only a handful of residents, the village became the starting point for imagining what its future might look like.

Seen through a fisheye lens, the mural opens out onto a water body, blue skies, mountains and farmland, with the village nestled within it. The familiar parts of everyday life are still there: children playing, old men spending their afternoons in conversation, and a woman on her way to work.

What has changed is woven into the familiar landscape. Vertical axis wind turbines, solar panels and water tanks sit alongside the houses, farmland and green spaces.

The mural also reflects the way Trespassers work as a collective. One artist begins a drawing, another picks it up, adds to it and takes it somewhere unexpected. Another continues from there. The final image grows through each artist responding to what came before.

The same feeling runs through the mural. Different elements come together and share the same space. Clouds pass across the sky and appear again in the reflections of the solar panels, wind turbines, water tanks and windows. Each reflection captures a small part of time passing.
It is not a completely different future.
It is a familiar place, imagined a little further in time.

Cities are often measured by what they build. Their wellbeing, however, is revealed by what they choose to remember.

Three years after its creation, Nochi Art District continues to embody this idea. Developed with the community of Nochikuppam, the murals did not seek to overwrite the neighbourhood with new stories, but to make visible the ones that already existed. Across the residential facades, the lives of Chennai’s fishing community, their labour, traditions, relationships and everyday rhythms became part of the public landscape itself.

In doing so, the district offers another way of thinking about public art: as civic infrastructure for memory. A city becomes healthier when its people can recognise themselves within it, when shared spaces affirm cultural identity, and when the built environment reflects the communities that give it meaning.

🎨 Art Workshop 🌿

Aloha Culture, in collaboration with Mankulam Grama Panchayat, successfully organized a creative art workshop for the children of Mankulam. The workshop provided a vibrant space for young minds to explore their imagination, express their creativity, and connect with art in a meaningful way.

Through colors, drawings, and interactive activities, the children discovered new artistic skills while building confidence, self-expression, and cultural awareness. The event celebrated the creativity and potential of every child, creating joyful memories and inspiring future artists.
