SUNDAY OCTOBER 25! 👻 ☂️👁️Just in time to round out 7th House’s spooky season at PRS, Switched on Cinema returns for another one-of-a-kind collision of strange cinema and electronic sound! This time, it’s director Kimiyoshi Yasuda’s wonderfully weird Japanese folkloric monster classic YOKAI MONSTERS: 100 MONSTERS (1968), accompanied by an all-new LIVE ELECTRONIC SCORE from Los Angeles artists 92Jelani and yuk.! 👹🕯️⛩️

The brainchild of dj A/D (@radiorealness) of KSPC’s @synthdactylprogram, Switched on Cinema pairs eclectically curated films with original live scores by synthesizer and electronics-based artists from Southern California’s music scene.

The first entry in Daiei’s beloved Yokai Monsters trilogy, 100 MONSTERS draws upon a centuries-old Japanese ghost-story tradition in which participants extinguish a light after each supernatural tale, risking the summoning of spirits into their midst! When a ruthless landowner schemes to demolish a local shrine and evict its residents, he and his cronies neglect an all-important purification ritual, and soon find themselves visited by a gloriously bizarre assortment of yokai: mischievous spirits, grotesque apparitions, a long-necked woman, a one-eyed umbrella creature, a sprightly turtle-like fellow, and a parade of supernatural surprises!

Produced by the studio behind Gamera and Daimajin, this fantastical romp combines colorful practical effects, elaborate creature costumes, spooky atmosphere, and a wonderfully playful sense of the uncanny!

For this special presentation, @92jelani brings the hypnotic and propulsive rhythms of his custom modular synth system, while yuk. conjures immersive atmospheres from modular samplers, cassette recordings, and found sound. You can hear a taste of @__yyuukk__’s gorgeous, atmospheric score in the first half of this trailer, followed by a sample of 92Jelani’s propulsive sonic accompaniment in the second half!

A one-night-only experience that can only exist in the theater, in the moment, and live!

PLEASE NOTE: The film will be presented without its original audio, with English captions providing the dialogue.

b e e n a w h i l e. Havent been able to digitize / record music for a couple of years. Thankful for cassette recordings and my machines for holding onto these sounds. Glueing this collage together, hoping to finish this collection before end of year. Another sonic time stamp to share soon. by @__yyuukk__
