The A1 Breakdown:
Skill-First Philosophy: Master mechanics before the scoreboard.

Game-Speed Translation: Drills that actually work when the clock is running.

Mental Toughness: Developing the mindset to handle high-pressure moments.

High IQ: Learning to read the floor and make smarter decisions.

Stop competing for exposure and start collaborating for progress. 🤜🤛

OPEN COURT PG WORK 🏀

Teaching point guards how to manage the sideline in transition.

If the advance pass isn’t available, don’t continue dribbling yourself deeper down the sideline and shrink the floor.

Change pace → get off the sideline → angle the dribble back toward the middle third → get your eyes across the floor → recheck the advance.

That change of angle creates a bigger passing window, keeps you out of sideline pressure, and gives you access to both sides of the floor.

A point guard’s job isn’t just to push the ball—it’s to push with vision, angles, and purpose.

FIND THE SMALL POCKETS. 🏀

I’ve always taught point guards—especially smaller guards—to see the game through the gaps.

When you can’t see or pass over bigger defenders, learn to locate low passing pockets. A sharp pocket bounce pass can get underneath length and through windows the defense thinks are closed.

You don’t have to see over the defense to control it. See the gap. Hit the pocket.

CREATE MOMENTUM. HAVE A COUNTER. 🏀

I’m teaching players to attack with pace, use specific foot counts, and hit the snatch back once the defender reacts.

The move creates separation. The counter attacks their adjustment.

Change the pace. Control the feet. Read the defender. Counter the reaction.

Across six games with Nigeria U18, Edore Pela posted a +42 cumulative plus/minus. The number matters—but I’m more interested in the work behind it.

We dissect film, identify the reads and counters, then take those situations directly to the court.

The A1 Basketball Formula:
FILM → DIAGNOSE → TEACH → REP → APPLY → EVALUATE

Footwork. Pace. Reads. Counters. Decision-making. Every rep has a purpose: give the player more answers when the game asks questions.

That’s development. That’s the A1 curriculum.

I’m teaching players how to manipulate the defense—not just react to it. 🏀

A downhill in-and-out creates defensive gravity. When you attack with pace and purpose, you force defenders to collapse, shift, and commit to the ball.

Once you’ve created that reaction, the retreat dribble allows you to bring the ball back out, regain space, and read what the defense just gave you.

Attack downhill. Create gravity. Retreat with control. Read the shift. Re-attack.

The dribble isn’t just about getting somewhere—it’s a tool to move the defense where you want it to go.

In this small group session, I am teaching players how to change speed with purpose and connect individual skill to team basketball.

We started full court, working on changing gears in transition—knowing when to accelerate, when to slow the defender down, and when to attack.

Then I brought that same concept into the half court: change of speed → create the advantage → get a paint touch → force help → kick it out → flow directly into our half-court action.

I’m not just teaching moves. I’m teaching players how to manipulate the defense, create advantages, make the next read, and understand what happens after they beat the first defender.

That’s development to me. Build the skill. Apply it to an action. Make the read. Play the game.

🏀 FUNDAMENTAL RHYTHM — LISTEN TO THE BOUNCE.

When I teach ball handling, I don’t just want players to see the basketball — I want them to hear it and feel it.

The bounce has a rhythm.

We build that rhythm through fundamentals:

🏀 Lateral dribbles — controlling the ball while shifting your body side to side.

🏀 Skip dribbles — developing changes in timing, pace and movement.

🏀 Hard, low dribbles + short steps — teaching the feet and basketball to work together while maintaining control.

🎾🏀 One tennis ball + one basketball — training both hands to perform different actions at the same time. Equal and opposite.

The goal isn’t to dribble faster just to look faster. It’s learning how to control rhythm, timing, footwork and the bounce of the basketball.

When your feet have rhythm and your hands understand the bounce, you begin to move with the basketball instead of chasing it.

Listen to the bounce. Feel the rhythm. Control the basketball.
