I’m taking Peer Mediation this year and in all of my years of high school I’ve never had a class that has touched my heart in so many ways and it’s only been a couple of weeks .During this past week in Peer mediation we have had the opportunity to learn about labels and their effects on people and how they view others. Labels have been normalized for years to make assumptions of people in our communities and school. It is very important that we as a community see the effects that labels have on how we treat each other because of said labels. Words hold POWER any sort of label can truly affect people. In class we have a saying “It’s hard to hate someone when you know their full story”. Labels are what we see on the outside that’s called the “10%” such as rumors, your appearance, stereotypes (your race, your gender, your style) and your actions. Instead of trying to get to know you solely off of the 90% which is the real YOU! think of it as an iceberg. You can only see the stop part which is tiny compared to what’s beneath it. These past weeks have taught me to not judge someone until you get to know them. Labels can truly make or break a person’s self esteem.

Most of my life I’ve been perceived as a person that is mean or rude or that I have been told I have a “rbf” but I am completely the opposite of that . being labeled as that has caused me many problems as I got older. Unfortunately they don’t take the time to get to know me, the real ME but if they did get to know me they would see that I’m very empathetic and LOVING. That’s why you shouldn’t let what other people label you as, define you. If you’re reading this know that only you can define yourself because only you know who you truly are.❣️

Hi everyone!!! Over the past couple of weeks in peer mediation, we’ve been discussing the definition of real beauty, and how society pushes unrealistic standards that make us feel insecure instead of letting us embrace our unique features.

Growing up with social media caused me to compare myself with models and celebrities from a very early age which made me extremely self conscious about my weight and my appearance from a very early age . When I was only seven years old my top search on you tube was “Gabriela Whited: How to get a summery body in 5 weeks”. Around the same time boys at school would make jokes about my “stick legs” and how small my wrist were.

When I entered middle school I got my hands on Instagram. The comparison only started to get worse. I constantly measured myself against models with the perfect button nose, clear skin, no facial hair, thick and healthy hair and perfectly straight teeth. I started doing insane nightly routines to try and “fix” my nose and shaving my face weekly. During the day I would be begging my parents for braces to fix my crooked teeth.

But today I chose to stop fighting myself to fit into the unrealistic beauty standard set by other people and embrace my body which was given to me by my parents and take pride in the facial features passed down from my beautiful mami.I want to smile proudly every day because I’m healthy and blessed. I forgive myself for the years I spent picking myself apart trying to fix my weight, my face, my hair, my skin instead of not living and not embracing the way I look because now I know I’m beautiful the way I am just how everyone is in their own unique way! #youarebeautiful @yabsticker by @_a1exa.f
