While visiting Kyoto we made it our goal to go to one bar specifically, named Hachimonjiya; a bar owned and operated by legendary street photographer Kai Fusayoshi. We sat immersed in dark room prints and books he’s published while photographing Kyoto over the past 50 years.

I had the chance to talk with Kai himself and we bonded over Chicago blues music. He was kind enough to sign his book “Kyoto Laid Bare” which I purchased there at the bar along with multiple rounds of drinks.

We spent the night wading through prints, books, and clouds of cigarette smoke while we met and conversed with locals, other Americans, and international travelers the like.

PDX is a bridge to the world. A liminal space, a threshold from which we enter the next chapter of our life story.

As I await my departure from this current reality, I find a moment for stillness.

No rushing. No noise. Just the quiet hum of a terminal full of people becoming — all of us suspended between who we were and who we’re becoming.

I’ve always loved travel for exactly this: the pause before the leap, the stillness before the story turns its page.

Next stop: Oaxaca 🇲🇽😜

If you asked me, when I shot these photos, just how much they meant to me I probably would have had very little to say other than they’re photos I’ve taken of my friend Evan Folden. Little did I know that 8 years later these photos would fill me with so much emotion; appreciation and a bit of regret for the time not spent in his presence. Time really is a gift of growth, love, and perspective. Recently finding more photos of Evan in my harddrives than I even knew I had was a gift that he and my past self gave ourselves before we ever had that intention.

Everyone who knew Evan knew he was a beautiful soul, a generous friend, and a light that filled rooms with laughter and love. Love you brother. Rest in peace. ❤️
