POSTS STORIES REELS

More than just a book…. Take a look inside the pages of BREAKTHROUGH: 20 Artists on the Album that Changed Everything

Each interview features its own custom design and layout put together by @danimation___, and includes an artist portrait illustrated by our own @josh__tweek. All the handwriting is my own, lovingly turned into 2 different unique typefaces, and my own hand drawn flourishes create the sense of an artist sketchbook or diary.

Four years ago, at the tail end of COVID, I was playing with ideas for a new project. My initial thought was to make a kind of oral history series, telling the stories of album via all its key players — something similar to RA’s Put Your Hands Up, one of the great documents about my favourite festival, DEMF. I wanted to deep dive into the albums I loved, but as I started working on the first edition, Laraaji’s Celestial Vibrations (1978), I realized this would be harder than I thought. The album is so old that several of its key players have totally retired from music, were impossible to get in touch with, or in some cases, had died many years back.

Like any good maker, I pivoted. I pivoted and pivoted until I had an idea I liked: telling the stories of seminal albums and the artists who make them. From idea to production to release, I would explore what it takes to make a record, and what it means when that record is successful. I kept Laraaji’s Celestial Vibration as my first piece, and from there I spent the next four years interviewing artists of all kinds. Techno, ambient, house, IDM, classical, rap — nothing was off limits, the only conditions were: Is this album memorable? Does this album resonate? Is it still worth listening to today?

20 artists took a chance on me, many of them before I even had a publisher. Although each interview is based around the creative process, we also spoke about love, death, failure, anxiety, struggle, connection, feminism, collaboration, and the inevitable, magical growth of an artist as their work and career unfolds.

The result is my first book, which is called BREAKTHROUGH: 20 Artists on the Album That Changed Everything. A massively collaborative project, the book was published by Errant Bodies Press. Designed by Daniel Ellwood, illustratred by Josh Wareham, edited by Will Lynch and Andrea Servert, with additional graphics by Julim Rosa. Video material by Odd Chocolate, press portraits by Palma Llopis. Invaluable support came from all friends and peers but especially Ana Bogdan and Heath Lock.

one more for the fans 🌱 with @donato_dozzy in 2018, recording our AIR episode at his home in Rome. by @_airpodcast

Exploring the singularity of playing in nature with @donato_dozzy back in 2018 — an essential memory for him was a set at @inner_varnika. I’ve had so many people tell me they were there for this otherworldly moment, a piece of music history that lives on not only for Donato but for the dancers who will never forget it. Swipe to read some comments about the set from SoundCloud, and turn your sound on to hear Donato’s take on it . Full ep is at the link in bio. by @_airpodcast

Another one from the vaults — 8 long years ago, I flew to Rome for the day to sit down with one of my musical heroes, @donato_dozzy. It was the start of an important and inspiring friendship for me, and in the years since, we’ve done 3 more interviews, each a true learning experience for me as a music writer.

This was our second time meeting, and taking our first meeting at Terraforma Festival as a jumping off point, we delved into Donato’s infatuation with the natural world, its role in not only his childhood in San Felice, but his adult life playing festivals in nature, his sets at places like Labyrinth Festival and Inner Varnika; and its continued presence in his sound.

The most listened to AIR episode of all time at nearly 25k plays, this is an all timer favourite, the one that introduced so many new friends and faces to my little series. Listen at the link in bio.

I think your voice is something that’s always changing. You have your core self but your voice changes with time… Maybe as you get older, you’re softer or more open. I’m more open to new music today than I was when I was 25.”

“I like to push boundaries and I like difficult things with music, but I also like joy and pleasure and I like when it’s a bit cheesey sometimes. People work all week and come to the dancefloor for all kinds of reasons, from all walks of life, with all their different emotions, and sometimes they want relief. I like being able to provide that with my sets.”

This month, I met up with DJ, producer, and label boss Jen Cardini, for what has become an increasingly rare face to face interview, taking place at Soho House here in Berlin. A DJ for over 30 years, Jen is a master of connecting, moving dancefloors, and taking dancers on a journey, pulling from all kinds of genres and influences, never tied down by labels but always rooted in warmth and energy. Jen has often talked about the idea of generosity as a DJ and its essentialness to their practice, so for episode 87, we delved into the many ways that music, the dancefloor and the DJ can give; self-expression as solace.
