What an emotional weekend. I wish I knew where to begin.

I guess I can start by saying that losing a parent is a war that never truly ends—it only becomes more manageable as life goes on. What I mean by that is that at the end of every day, whether you’ve had a good day or a bad one, you can’t pick up the phone and call that missing parent to tell them how your day was. That’s a hard pill to swallow, and THAT is the battle.

The question is: will you win that battle, or will you lose it? It’s up to you. Will you allow this inevitable fate that everyone must experience—death—to drain you for the rest of your days, or will you fight every day to not only make your cherished loved ones proud, but also to live a purposeful and impactful life?

I’m proud to say that my daddy indirectly taught me, within the seven years I had with him on this earth, that you must always strive to make the right choice. Because of that, I’m certain that God makes no mistakes. I can hold on to what my dad taught me for the rest of my life. I can firmly stand on the belief that a man must provide, protect, communicate, resolve, and most of all, love—because he modeled those qualities throughout those seven years.

As a spiritual person, I know I don’t have to go to a graveyard to speak to my dad. But reconnecting with him today at his burial site felt like finding peace. For some strange reason, while talking to him today, I felt a presence I hadn’t felt in a long time. I felt him. I didn’t hear him, but I felt him. And for the first time in so long, I felt at ease.

He may not be in that box, but I feel it’s important that I visit his burial site every now and then to process and reprocess my loss.

I may not have known where to start, but I know how to end.

Daddy, I love you, and I appreciate you. Happy Heavenly Father’s Day to a man who continues to show his presence even after death.
