Coogler’s artistry shines through masterfully in how he builds tension throughout “Sinners.” There is a sense of urgency that the evening’s juke joint party will be full of surprises, but the audience does not know why. It’s a music-heavy film, which adds to the feeling of constant suspense. Gӧransson’s score is so eerie that at times it feels nearly impossible to let your guard down. Expect a handful of jump scares in the film; the demonic flashbacks and piercing shrieks from the loud speakers could make even the toughest person spill popcorn all over themselves.

Making some updates to my bio this year because I recently discovered a few things about myself 😏

I don’t talk about this a lot, but the truth is that because I’m a young Black woman, my contributions as a researcher and sociologist are often ignored and not taken as seriously as other authors. But I’m also an expert in fighting the erasure of Black women, and I know one of the ways we push against it is by defining ourselves, for ourselves, just like Audre Lorde told us to.

Curious about where my work sat in history, my brilliant research assistant @_alexkeller_ and I decided to look at the data and here’s what we found.

There are phenomenal, history-making young women who have hit the Adult Nonfiction New York Times Bestsellers list back-to-back at younger ages than me—Greta Thunberg, Karrine Steffans, and Fran Lebowitz, whose memoirs and essay collections are brilliant.
AND research-heavy, single-narrative works are fundamentally different books.

We realized that when The Three Mothers hit the New York Times Adult Nonfiction list, I became the youngest Black woman to do so at 29 (excluding memoirs and essay collections).
When Erased hit the same list just three years later, I became the youngest woman of any race to achieve back-to-back placements in this category.
Achieving this at 32 was an incredible feat, and I didn’t even know it had happened!

I am endlessly grateful to everyone who has championed these books despite the systemic erasure we Black women have to fight against constantly. Know this, I’m just getting started! I will keep fighting for our contributions to be recognized every single day. by @_alexkeller_

Growing up listening to Parliament Funkadelic I never imagined sitting down and talking with Funk legend and superstar @yolikegeorge. It’s just one of those places your mind doesn’t even drift off to.

But thank God for destiny and getting tapped on the shoulder to tackle a story about the mega-dance hit, Atomic Dog. Happy #BlackMusicMonth.
