Sitting in class yesterday, I could have cried multiple times. Hearing two professors mention they are in their forties just had me feeling so bad. How are my peers so far ahead in life and I’m a sophomore in college surrounded by college children? Why do I feel so far behind in life?

Then I remember the culture I came from.

The culture that said Proverbs 31 was the way and the only way.

A culture that made sure you prioritized everyone except for yourself.

A culture that kept women suppressed and kept them in their place at home.

A culture that did not value education or a career path for women. (Or children but that’s a whole other wound.)

I distinctly remember wanting to work outside the home when the kids were young and a woman looked me dead in the face and said, “No. You’re job is to raise people who change the world”

And I believed her.

I don’t talk about religious trauma often anymore. It’s a wound that runs deep. My choice to give my entire life to a church, still effects my life today. It’s the reason I’m sitting in a class filled with babies while I struggle to figure myself out.

Just know, if this is your culture, it’s not the only way. You are not a bad mom if you prioritize yourself. You’re not a horrible wife if you don’t want to have dinner sitting on the table every night with a spotless house. Proverbs 31 does not have to be the outline for every part of your life.

There’s more out there for you.

(Don’t get me wrong. I LOVED and still love time with my children. They are the main reason and motivation for what I do and they are the loves of my life. I do not regret the time we spent together. I just wish I knew there was a balance.) by @_amandalankford

You make every day more enjoyable and magical. Since you were little you’ve always been able to add a sparkle to anywhere you go. I’ve loved watching you become this amazing young woman. I got to spend the evening networking with some amazing women from the The WO Network: Women Leaders Of Kentuckiana at Five Iron Golf yesterday. We spent a few hours just discussing business and life. I also realized I am TERRIBLE at golf. 😂 by @_amandalankford

Watching my five year old niece was an adventure! I’m used to big kids these days. She kept us on our toes the entire day!
