The coloniser’s gaze. The descendant’s archive

Many of these photographs were taken to document, classify and exoticise Southeast Asian peoples.

The camera was colonial.
But the people were never just subjects.

More than a century later, these images preserve faces, clothing, rituals, architecture and ways of life that descendants can reclaim as cultural memory.

I colourise them not to rewrite history, but to close the distance.

They did not live in black and white.
They lived in colour.

Archival photographs digitally colourised. Colour is interpretive, not historically verified. Original archives/photographers credited where identified.

The late Nimsdai put Nepal on the map. He normalised excellence when the world hadn’t yet caught on to the mindset Sherpas and Gurkhas have lived by for generations.

Their commitment was so fierce it reminded the world of something simple: life doesn’t just happen to us. It comes FROM us.

I came to Kumbh Mela as a witness, not a pilgrim.

The largest gathering of faith on earth. Millions moving toward the water before dawn. Bathing, praying and believing.

Observing someone else’s devotion is its own act of devotion. You don’t have to share a faith to honour it. Watching people surrender to something bigger sharpened my own practice ☪️.

We talk a lot about practicing our faith. We talk less about witnessing others practice theirs. Both expands you.

This is why I love the city. One intersection in Melbourne.

The women on their headphones sang to the newlyweds for no reason and reward. Just joy, given freely to two people starting their life together.

We’re so quick to say the world is broken. But humanity shows up in the small moments, at street corners, between strangers, when nobody’s asked for anything.

This is who we still are. 🤍

11 years on since the 7.8 magnitude Nepal Earthquake in 2015. 11 years where life continues and goes on. Kathmandu may be hectic but their resilience and hospitality of its ppl is beyond my own comprehension. Beyond anything I could have imagined. Their hospitality, their humanity, restored my faith when I needed it most.

5 things I’ve learned about resilience:

1. It’s not about bouncing back, it’s about building forward with what you have

2. Resilience lives in community. Healing happens together, not alone

3. Strength looks like showing up every single day, even when it’s hard

4. Hope isn’t naive, it’s a choice people make, over and over again

5. The human spirit is far more capable than we give it credit for

Thank you, Kathmandu. For the lessons. For the reminder. 🙏🏼 These are the scenes one month before the quake.
