Some people you interview. And some people you feel like you’ve known for years.

@_andrewhulbert came as guest of Middle Ground on BrightIAM @brightiampodcast 🎙️ last week with myself and Henry Black, and what started as a podcast conversation very quickly felt like a chat with a mate.

Yes, Andrew has built an incredibly successful business. Yes, his journey, his lessons and his tips for success are seriously inspiring.

But what really came through for me was the man behind all of that.

A bloody good guy.

Founders shouldn’t have to grow alone. 💚

Our latest BBEA Founders Series, in partnership with @blickrothenberg, brought founders and business leaders together at @tentrinitysquareclub for an afternoon of honest conversation about what it really takes to grow a business.

From knowing when to scale and finding your niche, to cracking the US market 🇺🇸, surrounding yourself with the right people and thinking about your exit strategy, there was plenty to take away.

But the real value was having founders around the table sharing experiences, asking questions and being open about what they’ve learnt along the way.

1,500 trees planted in January largely thanks to @sarahaustinbiz and the @britishbusinessexcellenceaward.

This one has grown 2ft higher than any other sapling.

It's grown through snow, drought, floods, record high temperatures and 80mph winds.

Be more like this tree. Grow tall and shine bright against all adversity. Stand out against the other 1,500 you are competing with.

@_andrewhulbert built a business from his bedroom and exited for $100 million by 37. Now you can ask him directly about what it took to get there.

Andrew grew up on a council estate in Oxford and started Pareto at 27, without investors funding the launch or a ready made team around him. He went on to build a business employing more than 500 people, navigating the challenges of growth and private equity along the way.

His experience goes far beyond getting a business off the ground or signing an exit deal. He knows what it takes to grow a company to a scale where the founder can no longer be involved in every decision, and how difficult it can be to let go of the business you’ve built around yourself.

For anyone trying to remove themselves from day to day operations without compromising what made the company successful, that’s experience worth having access to.

Yes, agreed. The sentiment is right, it just needs to flow as one thought rather than saying twice how much you love doing it. I’d tighten that final section like this:

“I’m going to f***ing kill him.”

Six months after an unprovoked attack almost cost Andrew Hulbert his life, he came face to face with the man who had done it.

He was 15 years old, carrying a knife and filled with rage. In that moment, Andrew fully intended to kill him.

Thankfully, he made a different choice.

It’s another pivotal moment in Andrew’s story where his life could have gone down a completely different path.

Today, Andrew is an incredibly successful entrepreneur who built and exited a business for $100 million, but it’s the person behind the success that I’m always most interested in.
