Would be signed, but I got so caught up talking to them and laughing that I completely forgot. I did get the shirt i was wearing signed though, which was actually from their merch that I bought months before.

This is the band’s complete recorded works between 1997 and 2000, remastered from original DAT tapes. The entire album’s lyricism is sincerity in its purest form. I’m always left from start to finish, endlessly contemplating, wishing things could’ve been different. Not only are the lyrics great, but so are the people who sing them and the instrumentals. Hannah and Chris bleed their vocals together with the guitar riffs, working together perfectly. The emotions of overwhelming and reckless teenage love are captured flawlessly, making this one of the best twee-pop sadness masterpieces l’ve listened to.

Randomly stumbled upon this cool band sometime last year. Everything Else are two childhood friends from Liverpool who’ve been playing together since they were six. By nineteen, they’d holed up and made this debut album for Big Potato Records with nothing but guitars, pedals, and an instinctive connection that’s impossible to fake. The label kept their promise to release it exactly as captured, no tinkering, no studio gloss. That decision matters, because what you get here isn’t polished perfection. It’s the sound of youth at full tilt, reaching for something epic from a bedroom floor. You hear traces of The Cure’s icy grandeur, Echo & The Bunnymen’s shadowed anthems, Flying Saucer Attack’s haze. But mostly, you hear two people trying to put the confusion and wonder of their nineteen years into noise. It also features an appearance by Neil Halstead (of Slowdive).

First Day Back - Forward, 2025

Forward feels like a genuine love letter to ’90s emo while still sounding like First Day Back themselves. Formed by college students in Santa Cruz who shared a love for the genre, the band brings together winding guitars, spirited drums, emotional vocals, and Maggie’s violin, which gives their sound such a warm and distinctive feeling. I especially love how raw and intimate the album feels. Knowing it was recorded live in a Santa Cruz living room makes so much sense because you can really hear the chemistry and emotion behind it.

I love this album so much, and I’m so happy I discovered it last year. I listen to it whenever I feel like screaming my lungs out, so my neighbors probably hate me by now. Need to get the vinyl. I was way too shy to ask for a photo when I saw them, but I did get my CD signed, so yay. Forward is such a beautiful debut, and after hearing these songs live, I’m really excited to see where First Day Back goes next.

Slowfire was the first sciflyer song I ever heard. I immediately loved the sound. Led by mastermind Steve Kennedy, his wife Kim Oberly, and “drummer for life” Scott Eberhardt (formerly of LSD and the Search for God), with final contributions from Scott Christy (Astral). Culled from sessions completed around 2007 before the band went on hiatus, the record arrived as a long-lost treasure when finally released via Clairecords in November 2014. Unlike Kennedy’s previous reliance on vintage 8-track equipment, this was Sciflyer’s first time tracking in a full 24-track studio, resulting in a noticeably rich and deep sonic fidelity.

Like I said before 125 Rue Montmartre was a short-lived, influential German emo/indie band from Bielefeld (active 1998-2000). Their Discography compilation beautifully captures a unique blend of Y2K European emo and lo-fi slowcore. Their instrumentation is the star of the show: jangly, melodic, and bright Midwest-style guitar lines that frequently build into atmospheric, post-punk, and at times slightly dissonant crescendos. The rhythm section-warm bass and steady, driving drums-gives the music a highly contemplative and comforting groove. The defining quirk of their discography is the vocal delivery of Kerstin. Alternating between a despondent, spoken-word conversational style and urgent, escalating melodies, the German lyrics enhance the band’s mysterious and deeply personal energy. While this spoken-word style can be a bit polarizing or hypnotic depending on the listener, it pairs perfectly with the brittle, lo-fi production.

This album is beautiful. It contrasts a calm, unassuming aesthetic with remarkably candid lyricism about heartbreak, anxiety, and wanderlust. Although it’s not on No Angel’s level, it still blows my mind how it reached the mark of 10M sales in such a short time and how she didn’t enjoy any of that, the album is full of string driven masterpieces and you literally can’t rank them.

I first discovered Dido through the show Roswell, where “Here With Me” plays as the opening song. Ever since then, I’ve associated that song with love, longing, and comfort. I even made my ex watch Roswell with me when we were dating. At first, he didn’t like it, but eventually he’d ask me to put it on while we ate together. I miss moments like that sometimes—not really him, but the feeling of having someone to share little things with. Dido has such a beautiful, soothing voice. There’s something so gentle and honest about her music that makes it timeless. No Angel isn’t just an album to me—it’s nostalgia, comfort, and a reminder of how deeply music can become tied to the people and moments in our lives.
