“So you can’t even speak your language?” - an older Nigerian who literally grew up in their village to you, a younger person who was raised in a very (sadly) different cultural climate.
•
There’s a very alienating feeling that comes with growing up as a 21st century young Nigerian who can’t speak his or her mother tongue fluently. You always get spoken to as if it’s your fault for being such a disgrace, but is it really?

This poem is a jagged piece of my experience as a young Nigerian who grew up in middle class mixed, sub-urban Lagos to parents of different tribes and went to a Montessori school - all factors that served as excuses for me not knowing my language . I know there are many Africans or Nigerians like me who have been subtly bullied for being robbed of the opportunity to be in tune with their cultural language - sometimes even by the people who were supposed to teach you😭

This poem is like a rebuttal, an outburst: “Leave me alone, I’m working on it, and I’ll make sure my children don’t have to go through this. Not because of you, but because they deserve to know their culture”

Ladies and gentlemen... meet ANTHONY👏🏽🥹
aka Powerhouse. @_tonyshotit @_anthony_i_

This young man right here.
I don’t even need to say too much ,if you know him, you know him.

Most of you know me for my work in music and the production space.
But let me tell you about the one who stands with me behind the scenes.

Anthony is not just one thing.
He’s a Director. Videographer. Cinematographer. Livestream Producer. Broadcast Engineer. Drone Pilot. Audio Tech. Musician. Editor. Production Manager.
And honestly... so much more.

I remember the day he told me, laughing:
_”See me as the new age Director Eman”_ 😂❤️ @director_enman
That’s how much he believes in his craft. And he backs it up.

He loves what he does with his whole chest.
The quality he brings to live production? I’ve never seen anything like it.

I still remember when he sent me a photo of his new DJI RS5 + FX30 rig with his Hollyland receiver*
I just said “Ahhh... Omo” 🥹 this guy no dey play o🤧🤧🤣
It takes real passion, real sacrifice to save and build yourself to that level.

I’m so proud of you, bro.
You’re new to the scene, but already one of the best.

To our elders and mentors in the industry — please look out for him.
Cover him. Pour into him. Give him the exposure.
He will represent us well. He will make us proud.

His work rate is different.
Wherever you see me, you’ll see Anthony.
If I’m on sound, he’s on video.
If he’s not on video, he’s with me on sound.
He’s my backbone. My brother.

We are young.
We are ready.
We are passionate.
And we know our onions. 🥹❤️

We love you, Anthony.
Well done. Welcome to the journey, brother. ❤️ taken in Lagos, Nigeria by @_anthony_i_
