20 Days After Going Dirted 🌿 (Throwback Update)
A dirted tank uses a layer of nutrient-rich soil beneath a cap of sand or gravel. Unlike inert substrates, it provides a long-term source of nutrients, promoting strong root development, healthier plants, and more natural growth with fewer root tabs over time. 🌱
This is how the tank looked just 20 days after the dirted conversion. The transformation only got better from here.
Would you try a dirted tank over aquasoil? 👇

“Your aquarium filter does MUCH more than just clean the water.”

1️⃣ Mechanical filtration
🧽 Removes debris, uneaten food and suspended particles.

2️⃣ Biological filtration is the real powerhouse
🦠 Beneficial bacteria convert toxic ammonia → nitrite → nitrate.

3️⃣ More media ≠ automatically better
⚠️ You need useful biological surface area + good flow, not just a box full of media.

4️⃣ Don’t wash bio-media in tap water
🚰 Chlorine/chloramine can damage your beneficial bacteria.
➡️ Rinse it gently in removed aquarium water.

5️⃣ Never replace all your media at once
❌ You can suddenly remove a huge portion of your bacterial colony.

6️⃣ Filter flow matters
🌊 Too little flow = poor circulation.
💨 Too much = stressed fish and plants struggling to stay in place.

7️⃣ A dirty filter isn’t always a bad filter
🟤 Some bacteria live on the filter media.
➡️ Clean it when flow is significantly reduced—not just because it looks dirty.

8️⃣ Activated carbon isn't mandatory
🖤 Great for removing medications, odors and some dissolved compounds.
❌ But it isn't a substitute for biological filtration.

9️⃣ Surface agitation matters
💨 Good gas exchange helps maintain oxygen levels—especially in heavily stocked tanks.

🔟 The best filter is the one you maintain consistently
✅ Stable filtration > expensive filtration.

How you feed can make a huge difference to their health and your water quality. 🌱💧

Here are 10 things worth remembering 👇

1️⃣ Don’t overfeed 🍽️
More food doesn’t mean healthier fish. Excess food becomes waste and can deteriorate water quality.

2️⃣ Feed appropriate portions 🐟
Give your fish an amount they can comfortably consume rather than filling the tank with food.

3️⃣ Missing a feeding is usually okay ⏰
Healthy adult fish can generally handle an occasional missed meal. Don’t compensate by feeding extra later.

4️⃣ Know your fish’s diet 🥩🌿
Cichlids, herbivores, carnivores and omnivores have different nutritional requirements.

5️⃣ Choose the right food size 🔴
Food should be easy for your fish to consume. Oversized pellets can lead to waste and competition.

6️⃣ Offer some variety 🔄
A varied diet can help provide a broader range of nutrients and keep feeding interesting.

7️⃣ Begging doesn’t always mean hunger 😂
Fish quickly learn that humans = food!

8️⃣ Watch their feeding behavior 👀
A sudden loss of appetite or unusual feeding behavior can be an early warning sign.

9️⃣ Don’t leave uneaten food behind 🧹
Remove excess food whenever necessary, especially in smaller or heavily stocked tanks.

🔟 Remember: feeding affects water quality 💧
The goal isn't to feed as much as possible — it’s to provide enough nutrition while minimizing waste.

🐠 Good fishkeeping starts with good feeding habits.

Which of these did you learn the hard way? 👇😂
Save this for your next feeding! 🔖

10 things you NEED to know about H₂O₂ algae treatment 🧪🌿

1️⃣ Use 3% H₂O₂ only
For aquarium spot treatment, stick to standard 3% hydrogen peroxide—don’t use concentrated solutions directly.

2️⃣ Spot treatment works best
Target the algae directly with a syringe instead of exposing the entire aquarium unnecessarily.

3️⃣ More ≠ better
Higher doses can damage plants, moss, beneficial microbes and livestock. Start conservatively.

4️⃣ Be careful with moss 🌿
Java moss can be sensitive to peroxide. Treat the algae, not the entire moss clump.

5️⃣ No bubbles? Don't panic
Bubbling is oxygen released during peroxide breakdown. Lack of visible bubbles doesn't mean it's ineffective.

6️⃣ Control the contact time
Keep circulation off briefly during spot treatment, then restore flow rather than leaving concentrated peroxide sitting on plants.

7️⃣ Remove the dead algae
Peroxide weakens/kills algae, but the dead biomass remains. Brush, siphon or manually remove it.

8️⃣ Protect your livestock 🐟
Fish, shrimp and snails can be affected by excessive exposure. Always use a conservative approach.

9️⃣ Fix the root cause
Check light, CO₂, nutrients and flow. Otherwise, the algae will simply return.

🔟 H₂O₂ is a tool, not a cure
It can knock back algae quickly, but long-term control comes from maintaining a stable aquarium.

💾 Save this before your next algae treatment!

Not exactly the fish you’d expect to find in a community tank 👀

But somehow, he’s been part of this setup for months.
