Grief engulfs me.
I left Bombay a week earlier than I was supposed to in the November of 2021 after losing some of my closest friends at the time due to bad drunken behaviour at a party. It was no fault of theirs. Gin and I just happened to have an ugly marriage and hence, just very public fallouts. What happened then, as I’d realise much later, I further reduced the finite time I had in Bombay.

Years would pass and I’d steal moments and hours and weekends in Bombay. Until fate and dreams would put me in a different country and very far away from Bombay. It’s also true that Bombay is not the same sanctuary that it used to be, any departed from nest seldom is. But there’s a sense of belonging and a strange comfort in being around muck that I only get from Bombay.

How I dealt with all the initial trauma, I do not remember. The chocolates that were murdered to stress eating, I do not remember. The jokes that were made to cope, I do not remember. What I do remember are half baked plans with half baked friends, kind strangers whose familiar names I’ve started to forget and family members whose birthdays I’ll remember to forget. What I’ll remember is how friends who hate Bombay flew down to Bombay just to make it less mechanical. I’ll remember its lanes and alleys where old lovers and friends would buy cigarettes and coffee. I’ll remember all those first and pending dates at Old Street. Never to also forget all the fafda and farsan runs with NMS and all the banter with Simoliben.

Whether or not I’ll get to live in Bombay again, I do not know. But who has the time to think about all that? All I do know is that I have a 9 AM shift and hence, an 8:27 AM tram to catch for, you may take the boy out of Bombay but :)

Summer indicator ☀️
May everyone’s summer be full of plans and plans that involve doing nothing.
Summer is rightly associated with freedom (this is not about short shorts) for not much screams audacity quite like a group of friends having hot coffee on a late balmy night on Lygon Street. Writing this, I’m transported to my Imma’s balcony in પાલડી in the summers of 2007 through 2009 when I'd often pour buckets of water on the tiles to keep them and myself cool in the scorching Amdavad heat.

May everyone's summer be full of beautiful drumlines and bass lines and lemon desserts and friends that pick calls.
