Eight years have passed since the last time east and northeast Austin neighborhoods saw new leadership, but Austin’s District 1 seat will soon see new representation on the Austin City Council.🗳️

As Council Member Natasha Harper-Madison departs, she leaves the door open for six candidates. Five of these candidates appeared at the District 3 forum we hosted with Austin PBS and KUT News on Sep. 15. 👀

Their conversation covered affordability💰, whether or not to support a proposition that would mandate outside audits of City Hall and the controversial plan to redevelop Dog’s Head — all were subjected to the candidates’ attention. 🗹🗵

As the election season reaches full throttle, Austin’s District 3 could see new leadership starting in 2027. 🗳️

Incumbent Council Member José Velásquez faces four other candidates for the District 3 seat.

Housing costs🏠, affordability💸 and the contentious Dog’s Head development plan🌳 were issues raised during the candidate forum we hosted with Austin PBS and KUT News on Sep. 15.

Among the candidates, however, there were some differences.

@AustinISD's Burnet and Webb parents are facing a wrenching choice.

They can ask the state to close their schools for a chance to help shape what happens next. Or they can leave the decision to the Texas Education Agency if the schools' failing ratings become final.

"We are being put between a rock and hard place," one Burnet mother said.

Families have until Oct. 15 to gather enough signatures. As of Monday, neither school community had formally begun the petition process.

Austin City Council Member Paige Ellis needed 3,044 signatures to make the ballot for a third-term. 🗳️ Then, the call came in: she missed it by 62.

For six months, Ellis collected signatures across District 8. She wasn’t just battling the sheer size of signatures needed but up against swarms of mosquitos and the summer heat.

Up until the due date of her signatures, Aug. 17, Ellis was still stationed outside with a clipboard. 📋

She submitted 3,409 signatures — 365 more than what was required. But the county clerk rejected 335 names, leaving Ellis unable to run for a third term.

Austin ISD is under threat of a state takeover.

After years of failing scores at Burnet and Webb middle schools, the Texas Education Agency is required to intervene.

But what action it will take remains unclear.

TEA could strip the superintendent and elected board of trustees of power and replace them with its own appointees. It also could close the failing schools or take some other action.

How did the district get here? See more at the link in bio.

Travis County is poised to approve a $2.3 billion budget. So what does that mean for your tax bill and where would the money go? 💰

Commissioners have already approved a 2.5% higher tax rate. But because the median taxable home value fell, the owner of a median-valued home is expected to pay about $30 less i county property taxes.

The proposed budget would also put more money toward disaster preparedness, housing, mental health and juvenile justice, while more than $2 million set aside for a potential expansion of surveillance technology is drawing scrutiny.

The final budget vote is Sept. 29.
