I don't think I've ever seen an audience response to compare with this ... But then, in commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Aberfan Disaster, we were dealing with a story of unparalleled poignancy. 'Aberfan - From Darkness to Light', with Paul Mealor's music and my libretto, received its world premiere at the Wales Millennium Centre with the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales together with the Ynysowen Male Voice Choir and the children of Ysgol Ynysowen and Ysgol Rhyd y Grug. And narration by actor Mark Lewis Jones. A full house, standing ovations, and so many heartfelt comments afterwards from the audience, many of whom were survivors and relatives of the victims of the appalling disaster in 1966 which claimed the lives of 116 children and 28 adults. What a privilege it has been for Paul and I to work with the members of this amazing community to tell their story in words and music. From the response on the night, we have reason to hope the project has expressed the hopes and aspirations that the people so generously shared with us. The performance has had excellent reviews in The Times and The Guardian, both of whom have singled out the children's choir as being at the heart of the whole experience. Hearfelt thanks to everyone who made this project possible. The story could hardly be more challenging, but the response of the community could not have been more inspiring. Llongyfarchiadau i bawb fu ynglyn â'r prosiect hwn. Braint oedd ceisio mynegi peth o ysbryd ac asbri'r gymuned arbennig hon. Gobeithiwn ein bod wedi gwneud cyfiawnder â'r dasg. #Aberfan #marklewisjones #paulmealor #bbcnow #lisatregale by @_bbcnow
