Way to Milkyway

The whole night out. That was great. We´ve seen star link very bright - 2 times (!) within one hour. Each time about 13 satellites, disappearing in the middle of the night sky.

The problem:
SpaceX's goal is to place a total of 12,000 satellites in low Earth orbit to provide worldwide internet access.
Pore Milky Way!

More than 2.000 meters high in the mountains you have such crispy clear stars. I have never seen such night sky before.

- ISS passes MOON -

speed of ISS: 28.000 km/h = 17.500 mph
camera: 10 frames / second
.
But it really works! It looks a bit like a zipper, splitting the Moon into a left and a right half. Even after seeing these images, I still can't believe that an ISS lunar transit can be predicted so precisely—down to the exact second. I shot 5 seconds before and after predicted transit. Transit itself lasts 0,7 seconds. Thanks to the platform: https://transit-finder.com for their reliable informations. The ISS arrived at the second in front of the moon.

The horizon was completely clouded over. So, instead of aiming for the center of the Milky Way, I turned my gaze straight up toward the Cygnus region. Standing right in front of the Radome, Cygnus is too high up; however, you can walk steeply down the meadow to a small road. From there, you have a clear view looking high up at the "colored Swan" with its bright red gas clouds.

Perseiden 2026
Burg Hohenstein, Nürnberger Land

Recipe: take a new moon, a cloudless night, a beautiful castle, two camping chairs, and a good buddy to chat with - @travelling_son_of_sepp. Hey Sigi, that was the “best Perseid shower ever”!!!

1,000 images from two nights = 33 + 54 perseids = 87 in total. Exposure time to capture the meteors: 277 minutes. That means capturing light signals for 4.5 hours.

Everything revolves around the North Celestial Pole directly above the castle; Perseus rose just to the right. The Cygnus region is at the zenith. That thing up there isn't a cloud, but our home galaxy, the Milky Way. And the purple stuff there consists of H-alpha gas nebulae - huge, glowing, and 2,000 light-years away.

All the images have been individually rotated to align with the same time. This makes the final composite a single snapshot - as if all the shooting stars were streaking in at the exact same moment.

Different chemical elements in the space rock produce different colors as they burn up. Magnesium glows greenish, while yellow or orange hues come from sodium or iron.

Solar Eclipse 2026 „at home“

Alle sind sie nach Spanien zum kucken. HIER ZUHAUSE WARS AUCH SUPER !!! Du fotografierst entweder die Sonne mit ultra kurzer Belichtung (hier 1/8.000stel) oder die Landschaft ganz normal. Nie kriegst du beides gleichzeitig und scharf auf ein einziges Bild. Daher musst du die Sonnenreihe extra machen und mit Photoshop in das Panorama einblenden.

You either photograph the sun with an ultra-short exposure (1/8,000th of a second here) or the landscape normally. You can never get both sharp in the same image. That’s why you shoot the sequence of the sun separately and composit it into the panorama using Photoshop.

Solar Eclipse 2026

Kurz vor der Maximum wurde es spannend, denn die Sonne drohte hinter den Wolken zu verschwinden. Man sieht das auch im Bild. Sieht aber dadurch natürlicher aus und nicht so steril.

Die Sonne wandert von Beginn der Verdunkelung bis zu ihrem Untergang nicht aus dem Bild. Alle 15 Sekunden ein Foto. Zeit zum Plaudern und Genießen. Die Bilder sind in Photoshop übereinandergelegt. Die Kurve verläuft exakt so wie der Lauf der Sonne. Von 200 Bildern habe ich jedes 6te ausgewählt, Sonne an Sonne.

Freue mich schon auf die Perseiden – Foddos der letzten Nacht. Zusammen mit best Astro- und Fotobody @travelling_son_of_sepp sah ich Meteoridenschauer wie noch nie. Einfach fantastisch. Die wohl klarste Sternennacht, die ich in Franken je erlebt habe. Man konnte bloßen Auges die kleine Aufhellung der Andromedagalaxie erkennen.

Towards the end, as the sun was setting, the light did start to fade a bit. Things got exciting just before the peak, as the sun threatened to disappear behind the clouds. You can see this in the image; a couple of the suns look slightly hazy, what gives the scenery a natural touch.

The sun does not drift out of the frame from the start of the eclipse until it set. Captured a sequence of images, one every 15 seconds. Time to chat and simply enjoy the moment. I stacked the images in Photoshop. Out of roughly 200 images, I selected every sixth one so the suns would line up in a row.

I’m really looking forward to the photos of the Perseids from last night. Together with the ultimate astro- and photography buddy @travelling_son_of_sepp, I witnessed a meteor shower like never before. The clearest starry night I’ve ever experienced in Franconia. You could even spot the faint glow of the Andromeda Galaxy with the naked eye.

Ein Blick von Pico Ruivo zum Pico do Ariero. Der Wind war schon sehr heftig. Da bist du froh, wenn du eine Steintasche ans Stativ hängen kannst, um es stabil zu halten. Eine einzige Einstellung im Hochformat, 10 Mal fotografiert und alle Bilder übereinandergelegt.

A fiew from Pico Ruivo to Pico do Arieiro. When very strong winds are blowing, it is a good idea to have a stone bag on the tripod to keep it stable with weight. The light between the peaks on the left comes from the observatory over there. A portrait orientation setting; 10 photos taken and all images stacked. The sky is tracked, stacked and then blended with the foreground. One additional sky frame with starglow filter makes the bright stars appearing brighter. As always: I shot all frames in the same night, exactly at the same place.

Colours of Rho Opphiucchi 💙💛❤️

Fiew from Pico Ruivo to Pico do Arieiro.

I like that colours in Rho Opphiucchi cloud complex. First time I brought out that magic blue, yellow and pinky red so bright. Black Horse nebula in the center of this image. The scene looks so calm and peaceful. But in fact you are continuously fighting the rough wind at the peak – the whole night long. You don't want the tripod to wobble when you're taking a 30-second exposure. So I had loaded at least 1.000 kg into the stone bag to anchor my tripod. Or perhaps just 999 ... 😂

I´ve never liked astromodification of cameras more. And: I quite forgot the integration of my h-alpha shots, what could improve this pink clouds in cygnus region even a little more.

Without Comet PanSTARRS C2025 R3

The plan was to capture Comet PanSTARRS C2025 R3 from a viewpoint just 200 meters from where we were staying—a great spot and perfect timing. Unfortunately, there were clouds right above the horizon, so the comet was not to be seen.
.
Instead, I got the Milky Way, featuring beautiful purple hues in the constellation Cygnus. I’m not complaining. This is where the camera's astro-modification really shines.

Die Idee war, 100m von unserer Bleibe entfernt vom Aussichtspunkt aus den Kometen vor die Linse zu kriegen - Comet PanSTARRS C2025 R3. Super Ort und perfekter Zeitpunkt.
Leider Wolken direkt über dem Horizont und daher kein Komet.
.
Stattdessen die Milchstraße mit den wunderschönen lila Farben im Sternbild des Schwan. Ich bin nicht unglücklich. Hier wirkt die Astromodifikation der Kamera so richtig gut.

Carpet of Clouds

Passend zu den weichen Wolken unten stehen die Sternen darüber, die mit einem Filteraufsatz ein bisschen weich gespült wurden. Iss schon wirklich ein super Gefühl, wenn man Wolken mal von oben sehen kann und über den Dingen stehen darf. Das Übereinanderlegen mehrerer Bilder macht die zweiten, höheren Wolken fast unsichtbar.

Matching the soft clouds are the stars, which were given a slightly softened look using a special filter attachment. It really is a fantastic feeling to see clouds from above and to be able to rise above it all. There is also an unstacked single frame where clouds and black horse can not be clearly separated by your eyes.
