Three years ago, this park was my escape, but not for the reasons you’d think.

I’d stop, grab some nips and White Claws, park my car, and just sit. I wasn’t there because it was beautiful. I was here to hide in shame. Because alcohol was the only thing that could quiet my mind. For a little while, I didn’t have to think. I didn’t have to feel. I could just exist.

Today, I’m sitting in the same park, celebrating three years sober.

The difference is I don’t need a drink to feel at peace anymore. I don’t need to escape my own mind.

I never thought I’d be able to say that, but today, I can. Three years later, I’m finally at peace with myself.

I’ll never come to understand why the world is so cruel. You were my best friend in the entire world. The first real love of my life. I’m so sorry you didn’t get to live out a full life and something like this could happen to you while I wasn’t there. My heart hurts so bad because I thought I’d grow old with you. I hope you knew how much you were loved. You helped me get sober and were there when no one else was. You cuddled me when I cried so hard I couldn’t breathe. You were there when I was sick. You made me laugh because you were my weirdo. And you were always waiting for me when I got home. I’m so sorry. My Benito. My love. I’m so so sorry. I never knew what heart break was until this.
