September 15th at the Sinkhole -

Eli Winter Trio (Chicago)

@thebookofeliw
Eli Winter is a composer, self-taught guitarist, essayist, and Houston native. His music synthesizes aspects of folk, rock, jazz, and devotional music, maintaining a waggish disregard for genre constraints emblematic of Chicago, his adopted hometown. His new album, A Trick of the Light, is an elegantly crafted and vibrant collection that finds the bandleader at the height of his powers: the dazzlingly intense arrangement of Don Cherry and Ed Blackwell’s “Arabian Nightingale” that opens the album, Winter’s muscular, dreamy originals, and his daring arrangement of Carla Bley’s “Ida Lupino.” His trio features Chicago improvisers Sam Wagster of Fruit Bats (pedal steel guitar) and Tyler Damon of Circuit des Yeux (drums), with performances at prestigious music festivals like Primavera Sound and Big Ears, and collaborations with a wide range of artists live and on record, including Yasmin Williams, jaimie branch, Caroline Rose and Ryley Walker. His concert history spans prestigious music festivals like Primavera Sound and Big Ears, pristine listening rooms, museums, university chapels, laundromat bars, and small rooms in shotgun houses.

!! Synoptic Frequencies is happening this Friday !!

-----------------------------------------------

Marisa Anderson channels the history of the guitar and stretches the boundaries of tradition. Her playing is fluid, emotional, and masterful, featuring compositions and improvisations that re-imagine the landscape of American music. The New Yorker calls Anderson ‘one of the most distinctive guitar players of her generation’, and NPR refers to her as among ‘this era’s most powerful players’.

In addition to multiple solo releases on Thrill Jockey, past collaborative projects include two albums with drummer Jim White, one with guitarist William Tyler, and contributions to recordings by Matmos, Tara Jane O’Neil, Beth Ditto, Sharon Van Etten, Circuit Des Yeux, Charlie Parr, Myriam Gendron and Big|Brave.

Classically trained, Anderson honed her skills playing in country, jazz and circus bands. Her current work is focused on a mid-20th century archive of recorded music from the Islamic world, Southeast Asia and the Soviet Union.

----------------------------------------------

Dave Stone is a saxophonist and improvisor based in Saint Louis. He's perhaps best known as the leader of an eponymous trio, which has been a fixture on the jazz scene since 1995, and had a legendary 24-year-long weekly residency at Mangia Italiano. His ensemble project is bigger, looser and freer, bringing together a rotating cast of improv luminaries from around the city.

-----------------------------------------------

Blooming, the new duo of Evan Geiger and Kerem Atalay, uses bass and fingerpicked guitar to create circuitous and pastoral compositions that float somewhere between earthy folk music and nebulous ambience.

-----------------------------------------------

It will be at the lovely and acoustically amazing Gethsemane Lutheran Church. Feeling very grateful to Gethsemane for being so kind and supportive to us over the years ✨💜✨ by @_bl.ooming
