Winter nights, kiln troubles (😩) and paracord shoes have all been part of how these new keychains and necklaces have come to be. Here are some close up details of the handmade beads I’ve made as a way of bringing work inside the house during the cold winter nights, my studio shed is just way too cold! I’m enjoying how these have turned out, the necklaces are my favourite as they have adjustable cord lengths to suit what you’re wearing, there is also something great about making ceramics wearable as well.
Come and check these out along with some new work I’ll be bringing with me to a small ceramic market in Marrickville… October dates and location to be released shortly.

These raku rock boxes were completed today, the very last raku firing of the year before the warm weather of spring.

A few of our Glaze Galleria Members & myself did a RAKU firing workshop on Sunday. It was an all day affair with 11 potters who had all made & bisque fired Raku clay pieces for the day. We experienced the whole process of RAKU firing, which is glazing the pots then rapidly firing them in a specialised kiln to almost 1000 degrees. Once the pots are removed from the hot kiln they are placed into a closed metal container which starves them of oxygen while they cool to create the most amazing effects on the final glazes. The same glaze can look completely different on different parts of the pot and different pots too, in the same firing.

We loved it and already have our names on the list for next year’s workshop! Thanks to Rhianna & Kerry from @blakeclay for running the workshop & Blacktown Arts & Crafts for hosting.

Two little kurinuki rock boxes raku fired. Glaze was a touch too thin on these as I was testing some freshly mixed glaze: white crackle and the spectacular aurora. I also used red raku clay rather than white raku which comes through of the glaze is not thick enough. These two are still gorgeous though, these iPhone photos don’t quite do the glaze justice. More of these coming soon with a few raku firings ahead. by @_blake_clay

Visiting Japan and amongst some theme parks and looking for gatcha toys with my kids, we managed to drive to Shigaraki as a side trip from Kyoto to Osaka and was fortunate enough to see an exhibition of Koyama Kiyoko‘s work, have lunch at Matsumian, and stop in at the ceramic tool shop. Already planning my next trip to Japan to visit more ceramic places especially to Mashiko and the work of Hamada Shōji.

I’ve done the near equivalent of Christmas Day and have opened the kiln this morning with over 216 test tiles ready to examine and choose.

I have tested 6 different clay bodies: 5 of my favourite Keane ones - Stoneware 7, Stoneware 33, Stoneware 5, Toast, White Raku and Witgert.

The testing contained 36 different variations of a matte base glaze using a range of colourants which gave a spectrum of colour combinations. It took the best part of a full day to mix the base glaze, measure all the colourants, mix all the combinations, dip all the test tiles.

Super happy with this test, lots to choose from and the opportunity it begin a new series of work from a fresh glaze palette.
Think I’ll need some help choosing some colour combos, let me know if there are some you like!
